Job Description

CUPELAKERIDGE HEALTHRELEASE OF HEALTH INFOMATION SPECIALISTHEALTH INFORMATION MANAGEMENTREGULAR PART TIME8 HOUR DAY SHIFTS (subject to change)Lakeridge Health Oshawa & Ajax-PickeringSALARY: $29.76 - $31.42 per hourCUPE 2200003046DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:The Release of Information Specialist is responsible for:

  • processing all release of information requests in a timely and efficient manner, ensuring accuracy and completeness;
  • providing customers with the highest quality product and excellent customer service;
  • maintaining and safeguarding the patients right to privacy by ensuring that only authorized individuals have access to the patients medical information;
  • maintaining privacy of all patients and employees, and access such information only on a need-to-know basis for business purposes;
  • ensuring that all releases of information are in compliance with the request, authorization, current legislation, and Lakeridge Health policies;
  • maintaining working knowledge of the existing laws and fee structures;
  • recording the receipt and dispatch of all correspondence;
  • preparing medical records for court and attending court when requested;
  • participating in departmental quality improvement activities;
  • performing quality checks to assure accuracy of release, confidentiality, and proper invoicing;
  • maintaining a positive and professional image for the program;
  • must display and maintain a customer-focused attitude, and contribute to a positive work environment;
  • maintaining a neat, clean, and professional personal appearance and observe the established dress code;
  • completing general clerical office duties as well as other duties, as assigned; and
  • maintaining current and yearly CHIMA certification.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Graduate of a recognized Health Information Management program;
  • Certified with the Canadian College of Health Information Management (CCHIM);
  • Active membership and in good-standing with the Canadian Health Information Management Association (CHIMA);
  • Certification with the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) is an asset;
  • Must be knowledgeable in current and pending legislation governing privacy, and access/disclosure of personal health information;
  • Must maintain strict adherence to confidentiality rules;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal;
  • Must have proven customer satisfaction skills, and good public relations skills with patients, staff, managers, physicians, lawyers, insurance companies, police, and visitors;
  • Must have competence in medical terminology and health record management including knowledge of the requirements of a complete health record;
  • Must have excellent organizational skills, independent work skills, and an ability to prioritize work to meet deadlines;
  • Must be detail-oriented and able to pay close attention to accuracy;
  • Must be a critical thinker and be proactive in developing systems to facilitate improved record release and/or to safeguard health information;
  • Must be self-motivated, a team player;
  • Must be able to work with minimal supervision and be productive in a busy/stressful environment with frequent interruptions;
  • Previous Meditech experience preferred (ADM, MRI modules);
  • Must have strong computer software experience, including a general working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel;
  • Strong keyboarding and computer skills;
  • Proven excellent attendance record with capability of maintaining this same standard;
  • Must be willing to participate in and/or educate health records staff at all sites of Lakeridge Health;
  • Must have the ability and willingness to travel to other sites as required;
  • Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to Lakeridge Healths comprehensive safety programs and practices including staff, patient and environment safety and participation in regular in-service in this area; and
  • Demonstrated commitment to our core values.
