Job Description

Fleming is located in the heart of the Kawartha Lakes Region in Central Ontario... a beautiful place to live and work, surrounded by natural beauty and a mere 90 minutes north-east of Toronto. The College’s 6,800 full-time and 10,000 part-time students, including hundreds of international students from countries around the world, attend at campus locations in Peterborough, Lindsay, Haliburton and Cobourg. Fleming offers more than 100 full-time programs in Environmental and Natural Resource Sciences, Fine Arts, General Arts and Science, Technology, Skilled Trades, Community Development, Health, Business, and Justice as well as other Continuing Education courses.We are also extremely proud of our more than 73,000 Fleming alumni who are contributing to their communities in the region, across the province and around the world.What Are We AboutWorking collaboratively with the Dean, School Operations Manager, faculty and staff, the Chair develops and implements goals and objectives in alignment with the College’s Strategic and Academic Plan and is responsible for providing academic leadership and management of the School’s day-to-day operations. The Chair provides leadership in academic processes, including new program development, program review, quality assurance, and curriculum revisions and renewal, ensuring a focus on the needs of students and employers in the labour market. They also contribute to the development of the School budget and multi-year capital plan and funding proposals. The Chair participates in Program Advisory Committee meetings and is responsible for the implementation of outcomes. The Chair recruits, supervises, and develops full-time and contract faculty and provides leadership and direction for workload assignments of the School. Through exemplary leadership, engagement, mentoring, support and communication, the Chair models the values of responsiveness, innovation, collaboration, inclusiveness and accountability that are inherent in the Strategic plan. The Chair participates on various cross-College committees, in collaboration with the Dean, seeks out, and fosters partnerships with industry, the community and other educational institutions and supports funded projects. The Chair will also work respectfully with our Union leaders ensuring faculty and staff assignments are consistent with College policies and procedures, Collective Agreements and best practices.This position offers an exciting leadership opportunity to work with a strong team and deliver an integrated and personalized learning experience that is valued by students, enhances their success and prepares them for their future.Through proactive planning, flexibility, transparency, engagement, mentoring and communication, you will model the College values inherent in our Core Promise to Students and foster a sustainable, supportive and safe learning community as you work collaboratively with the Principal/Dean and internal and external stakeholder groups to develop and implement the School’s business plan within the College’s academic planning processes and support the growth of the Frost Campus as a Centre of Excellence. Check out Life@Fleming.¿What We Are Looking For:As our ideal candidate, in addition to having a minimum of a master’s degree in a discipline relevant to the School (or relevant combination of education and experience), you possess the following skills and experience:

  • 7 years of academic leadership experience combined with professional experience in the field or discipline
  • Relevant post-secondary teaching experience
  • Strong leadership skills including demonstrated experience guiding, developing and coaching employees, facilitating change, ensuring employee engagement, mediating/resolving conflict, and inspiring and influencing a team
  • Demonstrated ability to cultivate and foster a collegial, collaborative work environment and empower direct reports
  • Deep commitment to equity and diversity with demonstration of promoting a respectful and inclusive workplace environment
  • Experience supervising professional staff within a unionized environment
  • Strong understanding of the processes of learning and teaching, with experience in curriculum design, development, and delivery at the post-secondary level as well as knowledge of learning design and innovative teaching and learning strategies
  • Experience developing and administering budgets, with strong analytical abilities and attention to detail.
  • Superior communication (both verbal and written) and listening skills
  • Exemplary attention to detail and organizational and planning skills including the ability to prioritize and continuously multi-task
  • Proven experience developing creative solutions to complex problems, with evidence of strong decision-making capabilities
  • Ability to be nimble and problem solve operational challenges
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain collaborative relationships with individuals at all levels of the organization
  • Experience in recruiting and hiring and workload development
  • Strategic and innovative thinker with the ability to connect the big picture to operations
  • Solid understanding of the disciplines and programs within the School
