Job Description

Fleming offers more than 100 full-time programs in Environmental and Natural Resource Sciences, Fine Arts, General Arts and Science, Technology, Skilled Trades, Community Development, Health, Business, and Justice as well as other Continuing Education courses.We are also extremely proud of our more than 73,000 Fleming alumni who are contributing to their communities in the region, across the province and around the world.What Are We AboutWe are currently recruiting contract faculty to teach Indigenous Studies within the Indigenous Perspectives Faculty Team.Our programs provide opportunities for students to succeed - no matter what their educational background, we help them build the skills they need to achieve their goals. Earning college credits while they explore programs leading to careers in health sciences, environmental and natural resource sciences, business or law and justice. Or, obtain the university-level admission courses needed for one of the Pathways Programs.Fleming College’s Indigenous Perspectives is an inclusive approach to providing a greater understanding of Indigenous peoples, communities, and nations. Under this initiative, students, both Indigenous and Non-Indigenous, learn the mainstream requirements for their program of choice from an Indigenous perspective. Course materials are geared toward program-specific learning outcomes with emphasis on Indigenous peoples, history, spirituality, culture as well as graduate level Indigenous Perspectives Learning Outcomes (IPLO).Fleming College has signed the Colleges and Institutes Canadas (CICan) Indigenous Education Protocol (IEP) which symbolizes our commitment to fortifying relationships with Indigenous communities while embedding intellectual and cultural traditions, as understood by Indigenous peoples, into our curriculum, and activities. For more details please visit our Indigenous Fleming webpage.For more information, please see the Professor Definition and the Guidelines for Professional Practice - Faculty.What We Are Looking For:As a bona fide occupational requirement, and under Section 24(1) (a) of the Ontario Human Rights Code, the College will be giving preference to applicants who identify as being of Indigenous heritage (including First Nations, Metis or Inuit). The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong understanding of Indigenous history, cultures, traditions and spirituality including an understanding of the historical and current relationship between Indigenous peoples and Canada. You understand and appreciate the importance of culturally appropriate protocols for Indigenous peoples.You possess a relevant combination of current (within the last 5 years) post secondary teaching experience and post secondary education. Alternatively, demonstrable traditional knowledge will be considered as an alternative to formal education. The successful applicant will possess a strong and relevant connection to Indigenous community and will be able to demonstrate recent involvement and participation. The applicant must also be able to facilitate and maintain relationships, responsibility, reciprocity and strong ties to Indigenous communities and the people within. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated and proven connections to Indigenous community.Your previous teaching experience will include applying theories of adult learning in teaching or training at the post-secondary level including curriculum development and using a variety of techniques. This role also requires self-motivation, flexibility and a passion for learning and student success. You will work in a team environment and develop/deliver curriculum using a variety of teaching methodologies which may include lectures, seminars, labs, field trips, work placements, computer simulation, online learning or other innovative delivery methods. Experience in an e-learning environment with comfort teaching both face-to-face or web-based delivery is a definite asset.This role requires superior interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to deliver and receive feedback, as well as well-developed critical thinking/problem solving and organizational / time management skills are required.
