Job Description

FULL TIME POSITION - UNIONJob Title: LabourerReports to: Manager PurchasingDepartment: StoresLocation: 1867 Ashburnham St., PeterboroughRate: $26.79 to $29.28 per hourJob PurposeThe Labourer will perform a variety of manual tasks and duties involving general building and property maintenance at the Ashburnham Office and other various Peterborough Utilities Group (PUG) locations. These tasks and duties are usually physical in nature and require the use of various hand tools and equipment.Major Accountabilities1. Perform scheduled housekeeping inspections and address general building and property maintenance and housekeeping activities identified including but not limited to minor repairs, sanding and salting of sidewalks, snow removal, lawn & garden maintenance, and office equipment and furniture moves . Report any major building/property deficiencies that cannot be resolved with internal staff.2. Provide delivery services for various departments. Pick up and drop off equipment and/or supplies within the City of Peterborough.3. Maintain stock levels in lunchrooms, washrooms, and paper/photocopy supplies.4. Support in the issuing, returning, and receiving of material/equipment/supplies.5. Support in inventory counts, putting away material into their proper location, and loading/unloading PUG vendor/common carrier vehicles.6. Responsible for the personal safety and the safety of others that is dependent upon their actions. Report hazards and unsafe acts or conditions encountered on the job to fellow workers and supervisors.7. Responsible for having a working knowledge of all applicable safety legislation pertaining to the job including,

  • Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS)
  • Occupational Health & Safety Act (OHSA)
  • Transportation of Dangerous Goods
  • Fuel Handling Act
  • Fire Safety Act,
  • Lift Truck, and
  • Propane Handling;
  • Working at Heights
8. Assist other departments as required; and9. Other duties as assignedDecision MakingDay to day repetitive work activities – limited supervisionSpecial work and projects – Daily management supportA significant % of duties are guided by procedures and functional rules
  • Property maintenance – i.e., snow removal, lawn care
  • Lift truck operation
  • Facilities maintenance
  • Inventory support
Problem Solving: minor facilities issues, unloading stock, equipment issues, space utilization.Decision making: Facilities – contractor support, equipment maintenance, safety requirementsEducation and ExperienceIntermediate, High SchoolSkills (Technical Skills):1. Demonstrated working experience related to the use of basic hand tools, groundskeeping, stores operations, and material handling equipment.2. Demonstrated working ability to undertake preventative maintenance and to make minor repairs to various tools and equipment.3. Demonstrated ability to carry out assigned tasks and duties with a minimum of direction and/or supervision.4. Demonstrated willingness to work extended emergency and planned overtime hours when required.5. Knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety Act.6. Working knowledge and experience using MSOffice Suite applications.7. Demonstrated excellent attendance record.8. Demonstrated excellent safety record and attitude.9. Valid Class G driver’s licence and good driving record.10. Successful completion of Lift truck training and obtained certification coupled with practical experience operating; and11.
