  • maintain and administer the provincial geographic names spatial data holdings in English, French and Indigenous languages
  • provide expertise and support to Ministry staff, members of the public, government agencies and the Ontario Geographic Names Board (OGNB)
  • conduct research on local use, origins and geographic extent of geographic features and place names and prepare communication materials to support naming decisions to the Minister of Natural Resources
How do I qualifyTechnical knowledge and skills:
  • You have knowledge of database management software, technologies and techniques associated with database design, operation, maintenance and management.
  • You have a thorough knowledge of business software such as word processing, spreadsheets, databases and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to query, maintain, and summarize and improve tabular and spatial data to improve the operations of the provincial digital geographic names database.
  • You have knowledge of principles and practices of geographic naming, physical geography, cartography and history of Ontario to provide expertise to clients, partners and stakeholders.
Analytical and problem solving skills:
  • You have analytical and problem-solving skills to assess data management and information requirements pertaining to geographic names database holdings.
  • You have well developed research and analytical skills to investigate name sources and histories, validate data and interpret and assess information.
  • You can develop data definitions, standards and techniques to categorize information and make recommendations.
  • You have good judgement to assess compatibility to ensure integrity of data and resolving technical problems associated with sharing and integrating names data with internal and external partners.
Communication and interpersonal skills:
  • You have proven negotiating and consensus building skills to reach agreement on directions, schedules and outcomes when working on projects with various stakeholders.
  • You have well developed communications skills to present technical information to various audiences.
  • You can prepare reports, presentations, media responses for Senior Managers and board members.
Organizational, Planning and Leadership skills:
  • You have good organization skills with attention to detail to manage competing priorities in a high demand environment.
  • You have planning skills to design and conduct information surveys and organize results for presentation to the OGNB
  • You can provide group leadership and technical guidance/direction to project team members and ministry staff.
