We stay connected through regular meetings, the use of a wide array of technology, and specialized collaborative workspaces.Job DescriptionThis position is based out of Henvey Inlet First Nation (HIFN) Reserve #2 (Lands Office) with most work occurring on HIFN Reserve #2 within the Henvey Inlet Wind (HIW) Project site. This is a part-time/full-time, seasonal position working variable hours per week, on an as-needed basis, from May 2, 2022 until October 31, 2022.Reporting to the Commissioner s Office Manager, the Environmental Monitor will perform both field and office duties to support administration and implementation of the HIFN Environmental Permit. Environmental Monitors will conduct weekly inspections of the HIW Project site and submit inspection reports to the Commissioner s Office Manager. Any permit compliance issues will be documented and discussed with the Commissioner s Office Manager for follow-up and action with HIW. The Environmental Monitors will provide administrative support to the Commissioner s Office Manager which includes responding to email requests, writing memos and reports. The Environmental Monitor will also participate in community engagement activities with HIFN on a seasonal basis.Primary Responsibilities:

  • Conduct inspections and complete inspection forms via ArcGIS: Survey 123 and Collector to track data and ensure compliance with the HIFN Environmental Permit with support from GEI staff
  • Prepare and submit Inspection Reports to the Commissioner s Office Manager, as per requirements set out in HIFN Land Law 2015/06-011 – Environmental Protection, to ensure thorough documentation of environmental protection aspects of the HIW Project with support from GEI staff
  • Collect field samples (e.g., water or soils where required to support inspection findings) and record data and observations in an accurate and well-organized manner with support from GEI staff
  • Maintain and ensure calibration of field monitoring equipment with support from GEI staff
  • Communicate effectively with project team members and coordinate with technical experts, as required
  • Support other environmental programs occurring at HIFN, as required
  • Participate in HIFN community engagement activities to support communication of Commissioner activities and findings to HIFN members
Qualifications
  • Grade 12 completion or equivalent
  • Ontario Class G Driver s License
  • Experience operating all-terrain vehicles, up to 40 hours a week
  • Transportation to and from HIFN Reserve #2 daily
  • An interest in ecology and environmental science related aspects of the HIFN Environmental Permit
  • Familiarization with HIFN Land Laws and their relation to the HIW Project
  • Ability to collect and enter data using mobile device (e.g., iPad)
  • Familiarization and/or willingness to learn relevant aspects of Canada s Species at Risk Legislation, as it relates to the HIW Project
  • Valid certifications such as standard First Aid are an asset, but are not required in advance of filling the position and can be pursued after hiring, if required
  • An interest in learning environmental inspection methods such as erosion and sediment control, water sampling, vegetation assessments and wildlife habitat assessment
  • A willingness to learn effective operation of GPS equipment
  • Ability to work in a positive and team-oriented environment
  • Ability to use computers and Microsoft office (Word, Excel)
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with all staff, community members and stakeholders
  • Preference will be given to HIFN members, neighbouring First Nation communities and First Nation applicants.
