Come join our team and provide technical expertise and assistance to the Ferry Supervisor and Head, Marine Services in support of Ferry Operations, Ministry of Transportation.   • provide technical expertise and assistance to the Ferry Supervisor and Head, Marine Services in support of Ferry Operations
  • command and direct the operation of marine vessels to provide efficient two-way ferry service to transport vehicles and passengers
  • develop materials, programs, and corrective action plans to ensure compliance with applicable legislation and regulations at the organizational, facility and staff levels
How do I qualifyMandatoryYou must have a:
  • Transport Canada Certification of Competency to reflect the level required for the vessel(s) in operation at the specified location (i.e., Master Limited for a vessel of 60 Gross Tonnes or more)
  • Transport Canada Marine Emergency Duties Certificate to the level required by Transport Canada
  • Radiotelephone Operators (Restricted) Certificate
  • Valid Continued Proficiency Endorsement
Technical KnowledgeYou have:
  • knowledge of, and experience with, seamanship principles and practices
  • knowledge of the operation of navigational aids, steering and propulsion controls, and navigational and emergency lighting systems
  • ability to apply knowledge of relevant sections of legislation such as Transport Canada regulations, Canada Shipping Act, the Canadian Buoyage System and Collison regulations, and Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act
  • knowledge of emergency procedures
Leadership and Supervisory SkillsYou can:
  • provide direction to, and supervise, crew in daily activities, including assigning tasks, checking work performance, participating in the assessment of training needs
  • provide direction to crew in responding to emergency situations in accordance with Standing Orders for Ferry Operation
Communication and Interpersonal Skills
  • you can interact effectively with passengers, staff and other internal and external stakeholders
Analytical, Organizational and Computer SkillsYou can:
  • analyze and solve problems in order to determine safety implications, weather conditions and load restrictions
  • set work priorities and assign work of ferry crew
  • use computer skills to develop and issue written reports of inspections, and investigations, and to do scheduling of staff as well as contractors
