The Strait Regional Centre for Education, with the support of approximately 1,000 employees, works diligently to achieve its mission “to empower our children and youth, within safe, equitable and inclusive environments to embrace a changing world as responsible, contributing and successful lifelong learners.” In 2019-2020, the SRCE operates 20 schools with approximately 5,952 students; and approximately 321 children are attending pre-primary programs at 14 school locations. Located in the northeastern part of Nova Scotia, the Strait Regional Centre for Education’s jurisdiction encompasses the counties of Antigonish, Guysborough, Inverness and Richmond, an area of approximately 11,000 square kilometres with a population of 53,125 (Census 2016).Work Schedule: 7hours/dayDeadline for Applications: 06/09/2021, at 11:59 pm.Effective Dates: 09/02/2021Cultural Activities WorkerThe Cultural Activities Worker will work with the teacher of the alternate education program and the Regional Equity team. As a member of this team, they will be work with at risk youth who are currently experiencing challenges being successful in school.This program will work closely with the school administration and staff to develop programs to ensure students are experiencing academic success. By incorporating cultural responsive practices and modification to program delivery, students will be given the opportunity to gain confidence and experience success. The alternate education program will provide students with a a variety of educational experiences such as land-based learning, cross-curricular project based activities and online instruction.ResponsibilitiesWill support the alternative education teacher in the development and implementation of land based learning activitiesWill monitor and supervise students both at EAEC/A, alternate education site and off site activities.Will support the alternative education teacher in establishing a safe, culturally responsive and productive learning environmentWill support the alternative education teacher in all aspects of educational program deliverySupport the alternative education teacher and the Regional Equity team in delivery of treaty education and reconciliation initiativesSupport the alternative education teacher with community engagement and partnerships.Other duties as determined by the Regional Equity teamEssential Qualifications:Be knowledgeable of the spiritual, traditional and cultural practices of the Mik'maw communities, such as ceremonial practices and protocols;Knowledge, and experience working with, and in, First Nations communities and have an understanding of the political, governance and community structures;Have an understanding of issues affecting First Nations;Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with communities and partners;Good verbal and written communication;Ability to work independently and as part of a team;The ability to work a flexible schedule when necessary;Respect confidentiality;Possession of a reliable vehicle and possess a valid Nova Scotia driver's license;Strong organizational and coordination skills;First Nation descent;High School Diploma or equivalent.Desirable Qualifications:Be fluent in the Mi'kmaw language and possess strong communication skills in the English language.Your application must include at least three (3) work-related references; one must be your most recent supervisor.
