Job Description

Four Directions Family Support ProgramCultural Family EducatorWetaskiwinHours: 20 hours per week.Contract Date: As soon as possible until funding allowsMust be willing to travel to Red Deer twice a month.Must provide a clean criminal record check as well as a clean driver’s abstract.The primary focus of the Cultural Family Educator Position is to provide families teachings with Aboriginal families and non-Aboriginal families who may be involved with or whom is on the border of being involved with Children’s Services Authority and facilitate culturally appropriate workshops for children and parents that wish to register in the Wahkohtowin Traditional Parenting Program. You will be living and working in the local community of Wetaskiwin and remotely communicating with your team in Red Deer.The Cultural Family Educator will work non-intrusively with the parents / children to facilitate the learning of:

  • Medicine Wheel Teachings
  • Traditional Parenting skills and techniques
  • Behavior management techniques
  • Emotional support and attitude
  • Personal hygiene
  • Home safety
  • Nutrition and meal planning
  • Harm reduction strategies (domestic violence, alcohol or drug abuse, etc.)
  • Sharing of responsibilities
  • Natural support systems
Duties (may include, but are not limited to):
  • Travel to Wetaskiwin to facilitate parenting workshops once per week.
  • Involve all relevant professionals upon parent/participants request;
  • Provide one-on-one in-home parenting education and support focusing on strategies supporting the Medicine Wheel Teachings when needed;
  • Participate in community events pertaining indirectly to the Indigenous Community and directly related to Red Deer Native Friendship Society and the local Family Resource Network;
  • Work closely with the Elders in the Indigenous Community;
  • Participate in weekly Four Directions team meetings to evaluate participant and program progress.
  • Complete quarterly and annual reports of Outcome measures for the funder;
  • Provide monthly and quarterly reports for the Director of Programs-Youth and Family and the Executive Director; and,
  • Any other duties as requested or required for the good of the center.
Qualifications, Experience and Skills:
  • Traditional Parenting training / Experience
  • Teaching / facilitation skills
  • Positive parenting skills (and experience)
  • Ability to build positive working relationships with a variety of individuals, groups and organizations
  • Respect and support local cultural values, beliefs and traditions
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with Aboriginal participants, including a sound knowledge and understanding of the issues that impact on culture in contemporary society
  • Experience working with at risk First Nation, Inuit or Métis population
  • Knowledge of social, economic and health issues relevant to the urban Aboriginal community
  • Strong interpersonal and communication (oral and written) skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of stakeholders
  • Strong organizational and negotiating skills and the ability to handle sensitive issues with tact and diplomacy
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications
  • Excellent time management skills, ability to multi-task and prioritize
