Reporting to the Deputy Minister, the Assistant Deputy Minister roles are part of the senior executive team that share responsibility for the development, planning and implementation of a strategic direction that aligns with the Saskatchewan Plan for Growth and ensures a ministry-wide perspective is incorporated into the delivery of programs and services.ResponsibilitiesReporting to the Deputy Minister, the Assistant Deputy Minister roles are responsible for:

  • Participating as an executive team member providing leadership within the Ministry and furthering the government-wide goals and objectives;
  • Providing strategic options, comprehensive policy advice, briefing papers, recommendations and perspectives to the Deputy Minister on functions, activities and issues;
  • Leveraging your strong understanding of the Saskatchewan economy and the role of government in creating relationships that support trade and economic growth and drive to meet the goals in the Saskatchewan Plan for Growth;
  • Building and maintaining credible, collaborative partnerships and relationships across a diverse group of internal and external stakeholders;
  • Mentoring and developing staff using strong leadership and team building skills with a focus on building organizational community;
  • Demonstrating exceptional diplomacy through written and oral communication including the ability to work with, and influence, a variety of stakeholders; and,
  • Managing fiscal and human resources to ensure the effective use of resources in meeting ministry plan objectives.
Strategic Policy and Competitiveness (Temporary Opportunity – 18 months)The Assistant Deputy Minister, Strategic Policy and Competitiveness is responsible for leading the development and delivery of financial programing, overseeing the economic research and policy development as it relates to the economic development for the province and leads the ministry’s planning and performance metrics. In addition, you will:
  • Have a strong understanding of the Saskatchewan economy and the role of government in ensuring a regulatory environment that supports investment and economic growth;
  • Oversee the assessment of the province’s economic competitiveness and lead the development, design, and analysis of economic incentives;
  • Represent the province on Canadian inter-governmental forums related to economic policy, competitiveness, and regulatory reform;
  • Manage major economic initiatives and guide government’s regulatory modernization and red tape reduction efforts; and,
  • Drive operational excellence by leading a high performing, values-based team to coordinate and advance Saskatchewan’s competitiveness and economic interests towards recovery and future success.
Economic Development (Permanent Opportunity)The Assistant Deputy Minister, Economic Development is responsible for the economic development and investment attraction within Saskatchewan providing investment services to companies. Indigenous economic development and economic reconciliation with First Nations and Métis communities is a key priority for the Ministry. In addition, you will:
  • Develop strategies to promote Saskatchewan and attract investment into the province;
  • Work with indigenous partners to connect First Nations, Métis and northern stakeholders to business opportunities; and,
  • Drive operational excellence by leading a high-performing values-based team to capitalize on strategic opportunities to grow Saskatchewan’s economy.
Background and Competency RequirementsThese opportunities are for experienced senior executives with an exceptional history of achieving results in collaborative environments, ideally within the field of economic development. In addition, you will have:
  • Leadership strengths that promote inclusion, engagement and foster an innovative, collaborative environment;
  • In-depth knowledge of government legislative and regulatory processes and protocols, in particular as it relates to public policy development and financial management;
  • Proven capability to identify and deliver key strategic insights, counsel and policy to ensure decision making is made with the best possible advice;
  • Demonstrated ability to build commitment through collaboration, consultation and consideration of citizen and stakeholder impacts; and,
  • Well established consensus-building skills, strong leadership and team-building skills, with an ability to mentor and develop staff to a high level of accountability.
