Job Description

Banff Constructors Ltd. is an experiened workforce contractor of skilled labour to the commercial, industrial, civil, and infrastructure construction industry in Saskatchewan and Manitoba. We supply trade crafts people, such as labourers, apprentice and journeyman carpenters, equipment operators, surveyors, mechanics, lecad hands/foremen, and superintendents on an open-shop basis. Our aim is to provide expert construction services with a focus on teamwork, performance, safety and success.Position Summary:Possesses the full range of knowledge to perform skilled concrete finishing techniques, primarily on flat surface concrete projects including sidewalks, curbs, gutters, and streets using a variety of hand and power tools . Align forms for sidewalks, curbs, or gutters; patch voids; use saws to cut expansion joints.Duties & Responsibilities:Supervise Apprentices assigned to crew.Inspect and/or supervise the mixing of concrete.Directs pouring, tamps, screeds, floats; and prepares for finishing troweling and edging.Lay blocks for meter vaults, headwalls, etc.Install and grout concrete pipe, as required for street modifications.Drive trucks utilized to transport employees, materials and equipment to and from job locations.Place and finish concrete floors, driveways, sidewalks, curbs, bridge decks and other concrete structures.Apply architectural, exposed, patterned or stamped, broomed and smooth finishes on concrete surfaces.Repair, waterproof and restore concrete surfaces.Uses dry pack grouting and epoxy materials, and understand how to cure concrete properly.Level and smooth the surface, round the edges, and make joints or grooves to help control cracking on the surface.Perform hand trowelling for hard to reach spots in corners, edges, and around pipes.Set the forms that hold concrete to the desired pitch and depth, and alignment.Spread, level, and smooth concrete, using rake, shovel, hand or power trowel, hand or power screed, and float.Mold expansion joints and edges, using edging tools, jointers, and straightedge.Monitor how the wind, heat, or cold affect the curing of the concrete throughout the entire process.Signal truck driver to position truck to facilitate pouring concrete, and move chute to direct concrete on forms.Produce rough concrete surface, using broom.Operate power vibrator to compact concrete.Mix concrete, sand, and water to produce concrete, grout, or slurry, using hoe, trowel, tamper, scraper, or concrete-mixing machine.Cut out damaged areas, drill holes for reinforcing rods, and position reinforcing rods to repair concrete, using power saw and drill.Wet concrete surface, and rub with stone to smooth surface and obtain specified finish.Wet surface to prepare for bonding, fill holes and cracks with grout or slurry, and smooth, using trowel.Clean chipped area, using wire brush, and feel and observe surface to determine if it is rough or uneven.Apply hardening and sealing compounds to cure surface of concrete, and waterproof or restore surface.Chip, scrape, and grind high spots, ridges, and rough projections to finish concrete, using pneumatic chisels, power grinders , or hand tools.Build wooden molds, and clamp molds around area to be repaired, using hand tools .Cut metal division strips, and press them into terrazzo base so that top edges form desired design or pattern.Fabricate concrete beams, columns, and panels.Install anchor bolts, steel plates, door sills and other fixtures in freshly poured concrete and/or pattern or stamp the surface to provide a decorative finish.Apply muriatic acid to clean surface, and rinse with water.Push roller over surface to embed chips in surface.Polish surface, using polishing or surfacing machine.Non-technical Requirements:Ability to understand customer needs and provide quality service that fulfills customer expectations.Knowledge of the organization's industry group, trends, directions, major issues, regulations and products.Understands how to identify individual personalities and has the ability to apply soft skills to maximize the employee potential. Recognizes the talent within othersAbility to empower and motivate individuals to accomplish results for which you have the ultimate responsibility.Qualifications:Experience: Minimum 5 years of related work experience.Knowledge & Skills:Blueprint ReadingInterpret blueprints and specifications.Identify and interpret scale rules and how to apply them.ConcreteDescribe concrete transportation and placement for forms and decks with reference to consolidation and integration of deposits (lifts).Identify and describe the cause of segregation and the use of chutes, tremies and pumps.Place concrete.Vibrate concrete.Describe curing methods in hot and cold weather.Describe fine aggregates, (sand, fibre mesh or steel fibre) and their effect on concrete quality.Identify the basic composition of grouts and mortars and their applications.Identify and describe concrete testing in plastic state.Describe the hydration process and how to retain moisture.Identify and describe concrete additives.Define admixtures for concrete, their uses and limitations.Describe where and how topping finishes are used and applied.Describe patching and bonding materials.Identify from drawings and describe monolith pours without breaks.Determine tolerances from specs.Determine placing sequence and loading method.Concrete RepairDetermine the level of preparation required, (chipping, grinding, demolition and bonding).Identify and describe architectural concrete finishes.Apply grouts.Determine what type of grout to use.Inject epoxy.Prepare and set up for epoxy injection.Estimating, Math & ReportingDetermine quantities for hardeners and finishing compounds.Apply indirect measurement procedures to solve problems (eyeballing).Finishing & Curing (for Commercial)Use epoxies.Cure concrete.Perform concrete placement (including rake, vibrate and screed).Describe rubbed and floated finishes.Apply stamps, templates, special forms and form liners.Describe and apply white and coloured concrete finishing methods.Describe surface hardeners and slip resistance.Apply surface hardeners and slip resistance.Identify surface treatments (broom, float and hard finish).Finish slab.Place and finish concrete stairs.Place and finish concrete.Finish a coloured slab with a stamped surface pattern.Apply a coloured hardener using the dry shake method.Use the water washing and brushing method to achieve an exposed aggregate finish.Use the seeding method to achieve an exposed aggregate finish.Use chemical retarder to achieve exposed aggregate for vertical and horizontal surfaces.Prepare set up for parge.Sack rub.Install stair nosing or embeds.Describe concrete toppings and grouts.Perform advanced concrete placing and finishing.Identify what is required and what your finishing can do.Hand & Power ToolsUse cutting and fastening tools.Use chipping and abrading tools.Use vibrators to consolidate concrete.Use floats and darbies.Use trowels, edgers and jointers.Use brushes and finishing brooms.Use mixing and conveying equipment.Describe the process of power floating, trowels and screeding.Layout & FormsUse builders’ levels: their parts and accessories and uses.Identify concrete stairs and forming methods.Identify steel fibres and fibre reinforcement materials required.Describe transfer of elevations.Identify and use levelling and grading procedures.Describe the forces transmitted during placement of concrete.Identify critical areas in forms that could cause a failure during concrete casting and describe how forms are designed to minimize this risk.Thank you for your interest in Banff Constructors Ltd!
