Job Description

Are you passionate about heritage collections Enjoy working with databases Want to help the staff and volunteers of small museums better manage their artifacts This opportunity might be for you.The Museums Association of Saskatchewan is looking for candidates for the position of Collections Database Program Assistant.The Museums Association of Saskatchewan (MAS) is a nonprofit organization located in Regina that provides training, support, and networking opportunities for more than 250 museums around Saskatchewan. MASs work and support reaches the lands covered by Treaties 2, 4, 5, 6, 8 & 10, the traditional lands of the nêhiyawak, Anihšināpēk, Dakota, Lakota, and Nakoda, and the Metis Michif Nation.The successful candidate will work with MAS staff to improve the SaskCollections database program, which helps 30+ museums better manage their heritage collections. They would help to develop training materials for end-users of the database program, collect data that will help MAS better understand Saskatchewan’s heritage collections.The candidate will perform the following tasks:

  • Assisting the Museums Advisor with the preparation of collections data for import into the database system
  • Conducting database searches and inspecting a sample of collections data to develop a profile of the objects held in Saskatchewan museums collections
  • Working with collections database users and the Museums Advisor to identify key areas where instruction is needed
  • Helping to develop training resources to enable database users to successfully use the database platform
The ideal candidate will have the following skills and experience:
  • Excellent computer skills, ideally with training and/or experience with a database system
  • A strong interest in heritage collections
  • A high level of attention to detail
  • The ability to determine whether information conforms to a set of standards
  • Excellent oral and written English language skills
  • The ability to communicate clearly with people from a range of backgrounds
  • The ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Good time management skills
  • Demonstrated ability to collect, synthesize and summarize information
  • Some training in Museum Studies or a related discipline would be beneficial
Who can applyThis position is funded through the Young Canada Works program. A student may be eligible for employment if they:
  • are a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada (non-Canadians holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent status are not eligible);
  • are legally entitled to work in Canada;
  • are between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment;
  • are willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment;
  • will not have another full-time job (over 30 hours a week) during the Young Canada Works (YCW) work assignment;
  • have been a full-time high school, college, CEGEP or university student (as defined by their educational institution) in the semester preceding the YCW work assignment; and
  • intend to return to full-time studies in the semester following the YCW work assignment.
