You will see us at municipal offices in Weyburn, the Polytechnique campus in Moose Jaw, patrolling the streets in Melville or at the front desk of our Legislature in the heart of Regina.About the Current Position:Commissionaires South Saskatchewan is looking for dedicated individuals to work as Sessional Ushers at the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan. The posting is operational during the sitting of the Legislative Assembly (specific days available on the Legislative website calendar and may change due to Chamber Proceedings), with some evenings depending on the ongoing work of the Assembly. The position will be active during the fall sitting of Session, as well as the spring sitting of Session, approximately 20 hours weekly. While the house is not in Session, these employees will be placed on the spare list and offered other opportunities across the 150 sites in which we operate. Wages offered are higher than average for Canadian security companies.Sessional Ushers are assigned to:

  • Discretely monitor and screen visitors entering the visitor galleries, to ensure that no weapons or other items that may pose a risk to the safety of the public or the Legislative Assembly and its members are allowed into the galleries or chamber; and ensures that briefcases, packages, etc. are not taken into the public galleries.
  • Watch for persons who may be in possession of contraband or prohibited materials or are demonstrating unusual behavior.
  • Meet with members of the public to answer questions about the galleries (e.g. sitting times, protocol) and explain security policies and rules of decorum in the gallery.
  • Assess minor threats and decides when to call Legislative District Security Officers for assistance.
  • Observe for possible demonstrators who may attempt to bring in items such as placards, bullhorns, or other means of demonstration to disrupt the proceedings of the chamber, lounges and hallways.
  • Monitor the order and decorum of the legislative lounges and hallways, ensures no unauthorized persons enter the chamber, lounges and hallways, and at the direction of the Legislative District Security Supervisor, addresses problems in public and press galleries.
  • Provide direction for the orderly exit out of the building in the evacuation of members, staff and visitors from all galleries in the event of a fire, bomb threat, or other emergency situation.
Requirements:
  • Must have reliable transportation to get to shift but a vehicle and all appropriate communication assets will be assigned to the employee to use during their shift if required for the position.
  • Must successfully complete a Criminal Record Check and reference background check.
  • Must be able to work in Saskatchewan.
  • Experience in the security industry preferred, however, not essential.
  • Attention to detail and professional approach in all areas of work and appearance.
  • Able to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing in English.
  • Dedicated and reliable and willing to work extra shifts if required.
  • Able to work well under pressure and provide excellent customer service.
  • Strong work ethic and positive team attitude.
  • Computer literacy, including effective working knowledge of MS Word, Excel and email.
  • In accordance with the social mandate of Commissionaires South Saskatchewan, preference will be given to military and law enforcement veterans.
Physical Demands:
  • You may frequently be required to sit and use hands to manipulate office equipment including a computer keyboard and mouse.
  • You will be occasionally required to stand for long periods of time.
  • You may be required to respond to both manmade and naturals hazards and must be able to assess and respond quickly and accurately should an emergency situation arise.
