Job Description

Its message is based on the Bible; its ministry is motivated by love for God and the needs of humanity.Mission Statement The Salvation Army exists to share the love of Jesus Christ, meet human needs and be a transforming influence in the communities of our world.Core Values The Salvation Army Canada and Bermuda has four core values:Hope: We give hope through the power of the gospel of Jesus Christ.Service: We reach out to support others without discrimination.Dignity: We respect and value each other, recognizing everyone’s worth.Stewardship: We responsibly manage the resources entrusted to us.Position Purpose Summary:The Indigenous Liaison Specialist will work alongside the Waterston Ministries team in providing education and resource support and on successful development and implementation of a wide range of communications and engagement initiatives, programs, activities, and tools to ensure the wellbeing of indigenous individuals within the Waterston Ministries community.This is a permanent full time position at 30 hours per week.KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:Communication and Resource Development

  • Assist the Waterston Ministries team with developing Indigenous cultural awareness materials for staff training.
  • Provide Indigenous Awareness training seminars for personnel.
  • Coordinate with elders and knowledge keepers for the provision of services and traditional teachings.
  • Provide input and resources for Management Team regarding ongoing engagement with the TRC Calls to Action / UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples within Waterston Ministries.
  • Help in the development and provision of workshops and training opportunities to improve cultural capacity and knowledge sharing for Waterston Ministries staff and residents, as well as other Salvation Army ministries in the community of Regina.
Community Networking and Partnerships
  • Assess and share local information and resource materials for Waterston Ministries that are culturally appropriate within the city and Treaty Four region
  • Assist Executive Directors and Management Team with fostering and developing relationships and communication with Indigenous communities and building partnerships to increase wellbeing of Indigenous residents at Waterston Ministries.
Communication and Reporting:
  • Establish, compile, and maintain proper records and files as required for each assigned program, writes progress and in-depth reports, and provides information on the outcomes of the programs and the progress of each client/resident.
  • Maintain and update all appropriate documentation and reports (including in-out and incident logbooks) related to clients/residents
  • Maintain statistical information relevant to the evaluation of service provisions and provide direct supervisor with other relevant data as required by the funder and The Salvation Army.
  • Prepare monthly outcome, statistical and measures reports in an accurate and timely manner.
Casework Accountabilities and Client Support
  • Support residents seeking to connect with appropriate cultural practices, both in-house and in the community (sweat lodges, pow-wows, etc.).
  • Build and maintains a therapeutic milieu with workers and residents
  • Ensure the physical and psychological needs of residents are being met through programming, individual counselling, etc.
  • Support and encourage residents of the program in their transition
  • Support the efforts made to meet the residents’ spiritual needs and cultural practice
Other Duties As AssignedQUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
  • NOTE: You may be required to provide validated educational documentation.
Education/Certifications:
  • Completion of a formal post-secondary/college/University program of three academic years in Indigenous Studies.
  • A bachelor’s degree in Indigenous Studies or its equivalent will be considered as a strong asset.
  • A working knowledge of the history of Indigenous people in our nation (specifically the Prairies), including the 94 Calls to Action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada.
  • An understanding of the history of The Salvation Army among Indigenous peoples in Canada.
  • First Aid/CPR certification.
  • Bring- indigenous knowledge and relationships to meet and assess the needs of people.
  • Alternative combination of education and traditional knowledge may be considered.
Experience:
  • Minimum of three (3) years of professional experience working with Indigenous communities.
  • Demonstrated in-depth working knowledge of applicable programs and services, legislation, and policies as well as issues with indigenous communities.
  • Connected to their community and a proven knowledge and understanding of local indigenous cultures, traditions, and communication.
  • Working knowledge of The Salvation Army’s services in Regina area.
  • Respect and understanding of The Salvation Army – its mission, culture, and values.
  • Preference will be given to an Indigenous person.
PREFERRED SKILLS/CAPABILITIES:Required Skills/Knowledge:
  • Ability to speak a local indigenous language is an asset.
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills, including facilitation skills
  • Attention to detail, problem solving, and analytical skills.
  • Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality with professional ethics and a balanced sense of fairness and flexibility.
  • Proven success in working within diverse, cross-functional teams focused on a common goal.
  • Demonstrated teamwork skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in stressful, high-paced environments.
  • Strong organization and administrative skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite, including PowerPoint.
  • Ability and willingness to support the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army
