Job Description

Job Title: Natural Area Manager, Working LandscapesLocation: Saskatchewan (flexible)Position details: Full Time Contract (24 months)Taking care of our environment has never been more important than it is today. The Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) is looking for an experienced Natural Area Manager, Working Landscapes to join a team committed to protecting our most important natural areas and the plants and animals they sustain.NCC is the nation’s leading not-for-profit, private land conservation organization, working to protect our most important natural areas and the species they sustain. Since 1962 NCC and its supporters have protected 14 million hectares (more than 35 million acres) of ecologically significant land across Canada. With a national office in Toronto and seven regional offices across the country, NCC delivers results you can walk on.*Position Summary: *The Natural Area Manager is responsible for the delivery of conservation programs within the Working Landscapes portfolio in Saskatchewan and in accordance with NCC’s policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. The Natural Area Manager will report to the Program Director, Working Landscapes and will work closely with the Senior Director of Conservation, other conservation staff, and the rest of the regional team in a collaborative and interdisciplinary environment. Externally, the Natural Area Manager will work with local landowners, land managers, Community Pasture and Co-operative Pasture patron groups, partner organizations, conservation volunteers, funders and others.*Key Responsibilities: *Conservation Planning

  • Assist the Director of Conservation Science and Planning in the updating and renewal of NACPs, with emphasis on the Manitoba and Saskatchewan Community Pastures NACP;
  • In consultation with regional specialists, prepare NACP progress reports; and
  • In consultation with regional specialists and external partners, develop and implement property management plans (PMPs) or similar plans for partnership projects within the region.
  • *Land Stewardship
  • Identify and implement land stewardship activities identified in NACPs, PMPs or other planning doucments (e.g., range and riparian management, invasive species management);
  • Assist in the development of baseline inventories (BIs and BDRs) and reports for new projects;
  • In consultation with regional specialists, plan and implement the conservation effectiveness monitoring program;
  • In consultation with members of the conservation team, administer grazing and project management, including development of annual or multi-year agreements and collection of grazing records;
  • Assist in the administration of partnership agreements;
  • Conduct annual property monitoring of working landscapes projects;
  • Complete annual monitoring reports for working landscapes projects;
  • Resolve any issues identified during monitoring or as identified by partners;
  • Deliver annual property reports to landowners, land managers, relevant government agencies and other partners; and
  • Develop and nurture positive relations with landowners, leaseholders and other partners in conservation.
*Securement of Partnership Agreements*
  • Under the direction of the Program Director, Working Landscapes and the Senior Director of Conservation, initiate and support the development of partnership projects following established procedures and protocols. This includes project scouting and initiation, negotiations, preparation of documents for internal approvals, budgets, and legal agreements, and reporting to funders as required.
*Outreach and Partnerships*
  • Establish and maintain positive and productive relationships with landowners working with NCC and other members of the local community;
  • Coordinate various extension/outreach events, which encourage community members to develop positive land stewardship practices;
  • Work with the Conservation Volunteers Coordinator to plan and implement Conservation Volunteers Program events in support of stewardship delivery; and
  • Represent NCC on various committees and at meetings or workshops related to land conservation.
  • *
Development and Communications*
  • Under the direction of the Development Team, manage project proposals and related materials for use in soliciting individual, foundation and corporate gifts in support of conservation work in the prescribed area;
  • Contribute to regional-level funding proposals;
  • Assist the Development Team with region-wide donor reports;
  • Manage all reporting relating to area-specific donor obligations;
  • Field inquiries from donors and potential donors;
  • Assist in donor tours; and
  • Under the direction of Communications Team, manage communication initiatives with an aim to raise NCC’s profile, develop good relations with conservation partners including landowners and lease holders, and support overall program delivery.
*Management and Administration*
  • Coordinate hiring, work planning, training, and supervision of summer interns and other conservation assistants;
  • Develop annual workplans and budgets in support of conservation programs;
  • Implement, manage, and report on progress against workplans and budgets; and
  • Conduct monthly time and billing in Tenrox.
*Skills and Aptitudes: *
  • University degree and at least 3 years professional experience in landscape ecology, conservation biology, natural resource management, agrology or related field;
  • A superior working knowledge of Saskatchewan’s landscapes, communities and conservation issues;
  • Strategic thinking and planning coupled with experience in business development;
  • Leadership skills, in particular conflict resolution and project management;
  • The ability to build and support effective partnerships both within and outside NCC to achieve the organization’s goals;
  • Project management skills, including excellent problem solving, planning and organizational skills, and attention to details and timelines;
  • Knowledge of the Nature Conservancy of Canada’s conservation planning framework, especially as it relates to the identification of priority projects;
  • Strong organization, communication and presentation skills, including demonstrated experience in making public presentations;
  • Comfortable working in a team setting and capable of easily communicating with a wide range of people from the public and private sectors;
  • Negotiation skills and experience with conservation real estate;
  • Flexibility, reliability, self-motivation, and ability to work both independently and as a leader;
  • Demonstrated ability to manage staff and/or volunteers;
  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite, and some knowledge of database and GIS software is beneficial;
  • Demonstrated ability to write successful proposals, business correspondence and donor acknowledgments;
  • Ability to manage highly confidential material;
  • Entrepreneurial, with strong ability to prepare and manage timelines, goals and expectations wisely
  • Willingness and ability to travel and be available for consultation.
