Job Description

Job Title: Qalipu Gros Morne Guardian - Two (2) Positions availableAnticipated Start Date: Aug 1st, 2022Location: Gros MorneHours of Work: Days, Evenings, Weekends, based on 35 hrs/weekPay Rate/Duration: $19.00/hr, 14-week Seasonal, Two (2) year Term PositionJob Description and Requirements: Reporting to the Fisheries and Enforcement Manager, The Qalipu Gros Morne Guardian (QGMG) will be responsible for aiding in the protection of Atlantic Salmon in and around the Gros Morne National Park. The QGMG will also support efforts to recover the Trout River salmon population in collaboration with Parks Canada. QGMGs must be familiar with the geography, river systems, salmon and trout runs, fishing activity and potential issues within this area.Responsibilities: The Qalipu Gros Morne Guardian (QGMG) will act as stewards to the lands and waters and work with Parks Canada to assist in protection, rehabilitation, and research activities of Atlantic salmon in and around Gros Morne National Park. This is a field-based position. QGMGs will conduct patrols of waterways in and around Gros Morne to document fishing activity and report on violations through the observer, records, report method. Fisheries violations will be reported to Park Wardens and/or Fishery Officers. This position will include:

  • Patrols by vehicle, ATV, or foot during the day along inland and coastal water systems to monitor for compliance with acts and regulations as they pertain to fishing activity
  • Operating boats, outboard motors and ATVs
  • Backpacking up to 40lbs of gear for extended periods, often over rough terrain
  • Surveillance operations for extended periods of time under confining conditions in isolated areas
  • Engaging with the public and anglers, and providing them with fishery related information
  • Maintaining a daily log of activities
  • Occasionally accompany Park Wardens in patrols within Gros Morne National Park
  • Providing a visible presence on river systems
  • Observation of illegal activities, with reporting to appropriate federal department and the Fisheries and Enforcement Manager
  • Making decisions in determining appropriate course of action under the circumstances including whether or not it is safe to approach observed violators
  • Taking detailed notes and preparing an orderly documentation of information related to breaches of fisheries legislation
  • Promoting public awareness and public assistance through participating in public awareness and education programs geared towards conservation of salmon and trout
  • Responding to inquiries from the public concerning regulatory requirements (e.g., open/close times, bag limits, gear)
  • Providing information on fishing regulations to anglers and outfitters
  • Preparing reports and patrol logs as required
  • Observing, recording, reporting on any obstruction to the passage of fish, deposits of deleterious substances, or any harmful alteration, disruption, or destruction of fish habitat.
  • Conducting monitoring activities and inspections of fish habitat, data collection for various biological studies conducted by Qalipu Environment & Natural Resources or Parks Canada (e.g., conducting water level and temperature testing on rivers, reporting on results, collecting data on aquatic invasive species, species at risk, assisting in electrofishing and any habitat risks that may be observed)
  • Maintain detailed daily logs
  • Maintaining and caring for assigned equipment
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:Education, Training and Licences:
  • Post secondary training in Fish & Wildlife, Environmental Studies, Enforcement or equivalent. Applicants lacking desired training, but with significant experience in this type of field are encouraged to apply with a one page written professional reference outlining the suitability of the applicant for this position.
  • Valid Standard First Aid
  • Valid Class 5 Drivers License
  • GPS Training
  • Valid Pleasure Craft Operators Card
  • Ability to work independently and unsupervised
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office suite of programs
Experience:
  • Experience working in remote field locations including the use of small boats, ATVs, etc.
  • Local Knowledge of the location referenced in this competition.
Working Conditions: This is a remote, field-based position that will include work on and around bodies of water and in forested areas. Duties may include strenuous physical activity and may need to be conducted in adverse weather conditions. A flexible schedule will be required to effectively deliver roles and responsibilities.
