Job Description

Founded in 1877, Rothesay Netherwood School is an independent, co-educational boarding and day school for Grades 6 to 12 that offers innovative, world-class learning experiences in a safe and caring school community. We provide a nurturing environment where students are empowered to embrace their individuality while pursuing the greater good.OVERVIEWAs an integral part of the school, the School Librarian ensures the library provides a welcoming responsive learning environment with resources and experiences to inspire, inform and enrich learning. The Librarian is focused on the student experience and acts as a knowledgeable resource that encourages literacy, critical thinking, and research at both the middle and senior school levels. The Librarian manages the library and the library collection of materials and equipment which include ordering and processing new materials, maintaining an environment where materials are readily accessible to students and faculty, and keeping collections current with the most appropriate, up-to-date material available. As well, the Librarian collaborates with faculty in the planning and teaching of information and research skills for all library users which include appreciation of resources, information, retrieval, utilization, and evaluation of resources.PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Collaborate with faculty and other internal and external stakeholders to plan and implement meaningful learning experiences and opportunities
  • Foster a love of reading in our students through awareness and promotion of books that will matter to them
  • Engage with faculty to help them find necessary materials and resources to enhance classroom instruction
  • Provide guidance to students and faculty in information retrieval, effective searching and evaluation of information, and ethical use of information, including bibliographic attribution and citation
  • Understand and promote copyright, fair and ethical use of information, as well as licensing of intellectual property
  • Integrate research skills into the schools curriculum and learning culture through collaboration with faculty and by leading or assisting classes
  • Promote effective student use of online databases
  • Ensure the physical and digital spaces and the culture of the library are inviting and relevant to the life of the school and broader community
  • Leverage technology on a daily basis and maintain a personal commitment to professional growth by remaining current in the fields of library and information science, education, and emerging technologies
  • Collaboratively cultivate and maintain library collections, online databases, school textbook inventories, subscriptions, media resources and facilities that advance the academic program of the school
  • Solicit suggestions and requests from faculty for acquisition of resources in support of curriculum and supplemental materials for the enrichment of student programs and learning
  • Organize the librarys collection of resources for maximum and effective use
  • Develop and maintain a collection of resources appropriate to the curriculum, the learners, and the teaching styles and instructional strategies used within the school
  • Develop and implement library programs and policies to maximize the efficiency and effectiveness of the library
  • Take a lead role in the creation of the International Baccalaureate Extended Essay writing process with students and faculty through our CORE program
  • Be a visible and active member within the school community and foster an environment of creativity, innovation, and openness to new ideas
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • A Masters Degree in Library and Information Science or a Bachelors Degree with experience in education and research.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Knowledge of current principles, practices, and techniques for school librarianship, educational philosophy, and information technologies
  • Demonstrated knowledge of databases, online public access systems, and circulation systems
  • Ability to develop, implement and coordinate programs and services to support a variety of instructional objectives
  • Enthusiasm for continual changes in the fields of education and library and information services
  • Ability to lift and move at least 20 lbs. of material (e.g., books in boxes, shelving, etc.)
  • Willingness to work evenings
  • Relevant experience managing and maintaining databases like Follett Destiny and Follett Textbook Manager and with the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme are an advantage
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to motivate, build relationships, and work collaboratively with faculty, staff, students, parents, and alumni from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds
  • Flexibility and initiative, as well as the ability to work independently, combined with skills for thriving in a team environment to achieve organizational goals
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment maintaining attention to detail and accuracy
  • High professional and ethical standards for handling confidential information
  • Proficient computer skills with experience using the MS Office suite
  • Willingness to be involved in the school community
