Job Description

Position descriptionReporting to the Director, Accessibility and Student Wellness, the Counsellor is responsible for providing personal and psychological counselling services to registered Mount Allison students.Position Responsibilities

  • Provide front-line psychological counselling services to Mount Allison students, mostly through the drop-in counselling program.
  • Services may be provided during set afternoons and/or evenings throughout the week.
  • Duties include: intake and assessment; therapy sessions for clients with a broad range of personal and psychological concerns; case management; referrals; crisis intervention; trauma support; appointment scheduling, and; coordination of care with other direct service providers and/or family.
  • Stay current on research and best practices in personal and psychological counselling.
  • Provide consultation as needed for Student Affairs staff pertaining to student mental health and wellness issues.
  • Coordinate where appropriate with Meighen Centre, Wellness Centre, Health Services, and Student Affairs staff.
  • Complete statistics on counselling services provided.
  • Perform other duties as required.
Qualifications/skills
  • Master’s degree in Counselling, Social Work, Psychology or related discipline from a recognized university.
  • Certification with the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association or the New Brunswick Association of Social Workers or other appropriate professional licensing body
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communications skills
  • Knowledge and experience in assessing and treating clients who have experienced trauma related to sexual violence
  • Ability to work successfully within a team environment
Additional Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with young adults as a direct service provider
  • Certified Mental Health First Aid Instructor or other Mental health programming experience
