Position descriptionPosition summaryReporting to the manger, international recruitment and admissions, the international recruitment and admissions counsellor represents the University to prospective students, parents, guidance counsellors, and other influencers, with a focus on international recruitment and admissions.The incumbent serves as an integral part of the international recruitment and admissions team, guiding prospective students through every stage of the recruitment and admission cycle, from the moment of discovery to the moment the prospective student becomes a current student.The incumbent counsels students on the recruitment and admissions process and the University in general, delivers regular presentations, assesses students for admission to the University and for entrance scholarships, prepares related reports, and assists with associated programs and materials.The incumbent is required to possess comprehensive knowledge and understanding of international educational systems, English language proficiency testing standards, a general understanding of Canadian study permit processes, as well as issues related to detection of documentation fraud.The incumbent works an irregular schedule to accommodate the schedules of prospective students located in diverse locations around the world, including evenings, overnights, and weekends. Extensive travel — physical and virtual — is required.ResponsibilitiesRecruitment of international applicants to undergraduate programsPlan and execute international recruitment activities to increase the number of qualified, diverse applicants and registrants in Mount Allison’s degree programsRemain current with developing trends and initiatives in strategic enrolment and international market researchImplement specific international market development strategiesDevelop and maintain knowledge of all Mount Allison programs, admission requirements, and other relevant information to effectively represent the University internationallyKeep abreast of admission requirements and programs across faculties and degree programs, including changes to degree requirements, academic and other University regulationsContribute to the development and updating of international recruitment materialsProvide training to other recruitment staff on international educational systems and admission requirementsProduce recruitment plans and itineraries as well as reports on specific recruitment activities conductedRespond to inquiries providing in-depth knowledge of admission policies and practices, as well as a general working knowledge of academic, co-curricular, and extracurricular programs, current events, and issuesAssessment of applications to undergraduate programsMonitor and encourage the progression of prospective students’ applications until they are enrolled as studentsAdvise prospective students and school guidance counsellors on the University application process and international admission requirementsEvaluate international applicants’ academic credentials and eligibility for admission to the University, ensuring that applicants are assessed promptly and accurately, and provide specific feedback as required to applicants who do not qualify for admissionReview language requirements for international admission purposes with an aim of ensuring academic success for prospective studentsCo-ordinate with the manger, international recruitment and admissions and other University departments (such as the International Office) to advise students on appropriate language support/pathway programsUpdate and maintain accurate data for admissions decisionsEnsure that the University’s international admission letters contain appropriate country-specific information related to education and visa requirementsAssess admissions trends for specific international marketsRegularly review educational systems, proposed and enacted changes in secondary and post-secondary education across Canada, the United States and internationally, maintain familiarity with curriculum and grading systems in other universities and collegesProvide training to other admissions staff on international admission requirements and education systemsDeal with situations where applicants are believed to have submitted false information or documents and train other recruitment and admission staff on document fraud detectionIdentify opportunities for improvement in admissions processes and data managementOtherIdentify opportunities for improvement in international recruitment and partnershipsIn consultation with the manger, international recruitment and admissions and the admissions counsellor — student information systems, build and maintain relationships with key international partners, agents, and schools in international markets through regular in-person, phone, and electronic communication to ensure that Mount Allison achieves and maintains preferred partner statusAssist manger, international recruitment and admissions and act as a backup to serve as Mount Allison’s representative for agents, ministry and government officials, English language training partners, international educators, parents, and prospective studentsSupport delivery of education and training across agent and feeder networks as assignedPerform other duties as assignedQualifications/skillsRequiredA university degree with preference given to graduates of Mount AllisonAbility to work effectively as an integral part of a teamExcellent communication and interpersonal skills, and strong intercultural sensitivity and cross-cultural communication skillsAbility to cultivate and build lasting professional relationships and networksStrong problem-solving and decision-making skills within the framework of University policyAbility to assess student fit for Mount Allison and advise accordinglyStrong listening skills, patience, and professional customer service with an ability to analyze problems and find potential solutionsAbility to demonstrate initiative, work well independently and with others while showing good judgementAbility to work under pressure, meet deadlines, and function at a high level with minimal direct supervisionExcellent organizational, multi-tasking, and prioritizing skillsPolished presentation skills and strong technical/multimedia skillsProficiency with computer applications in Microsoft Office, e-mail, presentation software, and a familiarity with student information systems (experience with Ellucian Recruiter and Colleague preferred)Ability to work flexible, irregular hours including weekends, and ability and willingness to travel extensively, both physically and virtuallyA valid driver’s licence and a valid passportRecommendedA minimum of at least two years of experience in a post-secondary environment in admissions, public relations, marketing, or other related field developing and implementing strategy, conducting market research, making presentations, successfully promoting servicesA minimum of one to two years of professional experience with and detailed knowledge of Canadian and American education systems, as well as a range of international systems, including familiarity with curriculum and grading systems in other universities and collegesFirst-hand experience at Mount Allison as a current or former member of the University community and a positive high-energy approach to sharing that experience with othersRegulated International Student Immigration Advisor (RISIA) designationKnowledge of university student recruitment and admissions procedures and CRM/student systemsExperience with international travel for professional purposesAbility to communicate in both official languages; ability to communicate in other languages would be an assetThis position is in the bargaining unit represented by the Mount Allison Staff Association.
