Position descriptionPosition summaryReporting to the residence life manager (RLM), and working in partnership with the residence life co-ordinator (health and wellness) (RLC-HW), the residence life co-ordinator (leadership and engagement) (RLC-LE) works within Mount Allison’s on-campus residence community to create and sustain a welcoming, inclusive, and actively-engaged residence environment that provides all residents with a safe, respectful place to live, study, and grow as individuals.The RLC-LE does this by:Working with students to promote respect for others, and regard for the values of community living, and pride in their residence.Developing and leading programming initiatives that support the ongoing process of community-building in residence.Fostering and furthering opportunities for positive student engagement and leadership in residence.Overseeing the implementation of a residence education curriculum based on University priorities around 1) Mental Health and Wellness, 2) Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, 3) Alcohol and Substance Harms Reduction, and 4) Healthy Relationships and Consent.Working directly with student leaders to plan and support safe, inclusive residence activities that contribute to a positive, respectful residence experience.Promoting and applying community standards for residence living through education and use of the Residence Life Code of Conduct.The RLC is a full-time, live-in staff member who works to maintain Mount Allison’s standards of community living. Successful professionals in the RLC role approach the position as a lifestyle, regularly interacting with students and student leaders.Evening and weekend availability will be required on a scheduled basis. In order to maintain safety and security as a high priority on behalf of Residence Life at Mount Allison, the RLC will also participate in an after-hours on-call shift rotation.The RLC is expected to triage and manage low to intermediate level emergent situations, applying conflict resolution skills and counselling techniques when necessary. When appropriate, the RLC will direct higher-impact situations to the residence life manager.ResponsibilitiesSelection and supervision of residence student leadersDevelop and implement of residence student leader training, including ongoing, developmental coaching to assist student leaders in enhancing the skills necessary to succeed in their roleIdentify ongoing student development needs and support requirementsOversight of risk assessment and risk management processes to ensure that residence life programming and/or other events are appropriate, educational, and approved as requiredAdjudicate lower and mid-level student conduct matters under the Residence Life Code of ConductLiaise closely and co-ordinate with RLC-HW positionPerform associated related dutiesKey activitiesCommunity development and student learningAttend programs and residence community meetings. Be present regularly in the community to build relationships with students and remain attentive to community needs.Actively promote all opportunities for student participation in residence life including academic, educational, and social programs sponsored by residence student leaders.Respond to student inquiries and concerns directly through one-on-one meetings and indirectly in consultation with assistant dons (ADs), residence assistants (RAs), and academic mentors (AcMen).Counsel students with personal and academic concerns, and make appropriate referrals to campus resources.CommunicationsMaintain the Residence Life website.Produce social media content across various platforms to support and promote the residence experience among current and prospective students.Student support, conduct, and emergency responseAssist ADs and RAs in setting standards and norms within communities.Meet with students to investigate and review behaviour, assess level of responsibility, and develop outcomes, using developmental and/or restorative approaches as appropriate.Ensure timely, accurate, and comprehensive documentation of student contact, agreements, outcomes, and plans.Refer high-level cases to the residence life manager, as appropriate.Respond to crisis situations as a first-responder to assess situations and initiate appropriate procedures or protocols.Consult with the residence life manager on any high-risk situations or where additional guidance and support is needed.Provide after-hours support to students to promote community building and student safety.Staff supervision and supportAssist with the annual selection process for residence student leaders, including recruitment, interviewing, and selection.Assist in developing and implementing training and in-service training for residence student leaders throughout the academic year.Provide supervision via regular team meetings and one-on-one meetings, advisement, and guidance, coaching and collaboration on community initiatives, and through role modelling.Conduct evaluations of student leaders that ensures opportunities for student input and feedback and for development.Hold regular office hours for drop-in students and student leaders (weekdays and evenings).Track student leader programming efforts.On-campus accommodationThis is a live-in position. The University will provide the RLC with year-round, on-campus accommodation with the option of an accompanying meal plan at the University dining hall. The apartment includes high-speed internet, local phone service, cable television, and utilities.Qualifications/skillsCompleted bachelor’s degree plus two (2) years of experience in residence life at the student leader and/or professional levelSatisfactory criminal records checkExperience in researching, developing,and organizing residence life programs and events, training and development, as well as surveys and assessmentsExcellent organizational and time management skills, and attention to detailExcellent interpersonal, and oral and written communication skillsAbility to liaise with a wide variety of contacts, including students, staff, emergency contactsAbility to work independentlyAbility to create an environment that fosters inclusion and a respect for diversityExperience delivering training/presentations and facilitating large groups of people and teamsConflict resolution skills and familiarity with restorative justice and counselling principlesAbility to respond to concerns and situations with professionalism, diplomacy, and discretionAbility to exercise initiative and sound judgementAbility to work under pressureStrong Microsoft Office skills, particularly in Excel, Word, and PowerPointFamiliarity with social media and website managementFirst aid training and experience with emergency responseAbility to work evenings and weekends as requiredThis position is in the bargaining unit represented by the Mount Allison Staff Association.
