Position descriptionThe Spiritual Care Coordinator will be a religious professional, with recognized credentials in their tradition—such as, but not limited to, ordination. This person will develop, coordinate and implement programming, and liaise with members of other faith traditions and community partners to cultivate an inclusive ethos on campus by providing opportunities for interfaith engagement.While the University is secular in orientation, it is critical to recognize the increasingly diverse and complex needs of our students. We particularly identify equity and access for all spiritual or faith traditions and all cultures as a goal. When students are encouraged to explore their own worldviews and those of others through interfaith discussions, they leave the University better prepared to be ethical individuals and global citizens capable of valuing plurality. The Spiritual Care Coordinator will play a key role in helping to foster this understanding as part of the Student Affairs team. They will work along with others to create an inclusive environment that is welcoming to people with diverse identities.ResponsibilitiesProvide central focal point for religious/spiritual practices on campus, including offering space of listening, non-judgement, and support, offering opportunities for connection and reflection through experiences in the natural world, and offering spiritual direction upon request/need.Initiate dialogue events for students, staff, and faculty to increase understanding of spiritual and cultural diversity for better living and learning together.Conduct and/or coordinate chapel services, e.g. for funerals or weddings held at the chapel, including those for BIPOC and/or LGBTQ+ community.Act as advocate/navigator in University processes for students’ spiritual needs to be met while at Mount Allison.Participate in classroom activities or on committees as requested by faculty and staff.Build relationships with interfaith leaders and communities in the local area in order to connect students to spiritual communities effectively.Explore ways to acknowledge, affirm and create space for multiple spiritual identities on campus, alongside representation of any tradition to which they belong.Utilizing existing infrastructure, help develop and ensure safe and appropriate interfaith/ multi-faith spaces.Work with other Wellness and Student Life staff to offer “life-ways” programming and assistance for students to help build skills and practices for managing stress, coping with transitions, grief, mental health issues, trauma, etc.Encourage and facilitate participation in opportunities for community service and action for social change that include intentional reflection to help deepen a sense of purpose and meaning.Liaise with Religious Studies department to connect Spiritual Care Coordinator programming with relevant curriculum, if and where appropriate.Serve as Chapel Building Manager and liaise with Facilities Management as required.Perform other duties as assigned.Qualifications/skillsA religious or spiritual professional (i.e., likely an ordained member of a tradition—or someone similarly credentialed, e.g. with a Masters of Divinity), or other related and relevant equivalent education and/or experience (such as grief or addiction counselling, etc.)Experience working with interfaith professionalsExperience in facilitating student success, for first generation university students; students from marginalized/lower-income groups; students from various faith and cultural backgrounds.Excellent interpersonal, communication, organizational, facilitation, and community-building skillsSensitivity to spiritual needs of a culturally diverse communityDemonstrated commitment to the highest level of integrity and ethical behaviourCounselling or mental health care training or experience preferredCompleted training in crisis intervention preferredAbility to maintain a clean criminal/vulnerable sector background check over timeAbility to work flexible work hours as requiredQuick Apply
