Each day, FortisAlberta employees strive to exceed customer expectations while maintaining a focus on our commitment to safety.APPLICATION DEADLINE: September 20, 2023REPORTS TO:TITLE: 12 month Term Engineering Technologist Power Quality (U23-313)DEPARTMENT:WORK LOCATION/OFFICE: AirdrieSTATUS: 01 Full Time - SalariedNUMBER OF HIRES: 1DESCRIPTION: Under the general supervision of the Sr. Lead Engineer Power Quality, the Engineering Technologist - Power Quality is responsible for the quality of power delivered to the customer. The Engineering Technologist - Power Quality investigates customer complaints of poor power quality to determine the cause and provide solutions. This position is also responsible for assessing certain planned customer load additions or changes to the distribution system to ensure power quality compliance with standards.RESPONSIBILITIESamp; SKILLS INCLUDE (but are not limited to):

  • Lead power quality investigations; this includes but not limited to gathering pertinent information, interviewing internal and external stakeholders, installing monitoring equipment to gather data, analyzing gathered data, determining compliance to standards and ultimately discovering causes of power quality problems.
  • Provide solutions and/or guidance to external and internal customers in pursuit of the resolution of the power quality problems;
  • Enforce power quality standards; this may include investigating loads/generation to determine non-compliance with the accepted standards.
  • Assist with the commissioning of new customer loads/generation and ensure compliance with standards.
  • Maintain power quality equipment, such as power quality monitors, spectrum analyzers, RF filters, antennas, line trackers; this may include scheduling monitor calibration and maintenance, verifying and applying new firmware, installing and maintaining equipment related software, coordinating equipment repair, and procurement of replacements and new equipment.
  • Perform RF compliance investigations to help pinpoint the sources of RF interference; this includes line patrols, communication with affected parties, communication and coordination with Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada, and coordination with telecom operators.
  • Verify that distribution apparatus, such as voltage regulators, capacitor banks, protective devices, etc., operate as per design.
  • Investigate distribution system reliability concerns and identify potential protection deficiencies and power line maintenance requirements.
  • Support day to day operations as required.
  • Assist Standards group in the evaluation of new distribution equipment.
  • Propose changes to existing distribution equipment where required.
  • Build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders; this includes seeking input/feedback from stakeholders in order to manage and meet their expectations and needs; maintaining various records and producing reports as required.
  • Special projects and other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLSamp; ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of Canadian and international power quality standards.
  • Working knowledge of electrical distribution systems, associated equipment and the operation of various control devices.
  • Knowledge of power quality monitoring equipment and distribution equipment control devices and basic trouble shooting of same. Working knowledge of spectrum analyzers is a plus.
  • Strong customer service focus with a proven ability to develop and maintain effective relationships; this includes excellent communication, interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
  • Advanced computer and analytical skills required to interpret monitoring data and to evaluate possible solutions.
  • Excellent organizational skills in order to manage high volumes of work with attention to detail.
  • Proven ability to take initiative, analyze and solve problems. This involves ability to work proactively and independently with minimal supervision.
  • Knowledge and use of safe work practices and personal protective equipment.
  • Working knowledge of the Canadian Electrical Code is desired.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology OR Power Systems Electrician Certificate plus a minimum of 6 years of related experience is required.
  • A valid Class 5 driver #39;s license is required.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • 2 years of prior experience working with energized equipment is considered an asset.
  • Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.) designation is considered an asset.
  • Distribution planning or design experience is considered an asset.
  • Protection and Control experience is considered an asset.
  • Experience working with databases or computer programming is considered an asset.
  • Experience with metering circuits is considered an asset.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS:
  • Due to geographic and training considerations, some travel including overnight stays is required.
  • This has been identified as a safety-sensitive position. All successful candidates will be subject to a pre-employment drug and alcohol test.
