Job TitleLaboratory TechnicianJob TypePermanent Full-timeCategoryAcademic support, Administrative Support, Student ServicesSalary GradeLaboratory Technician - $24.21 - $32.32Job DescriptionIMPORTANT: Effective immediately.JOB SUMMARY:UNDER THE GENERAL AUTHORITY OF THE ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF STUDENT SERVICES AND THE DIRECT SUPERVISION OF THE EDUCATION ADVISOR, THE TECHNICIAN WILL ASSIST THE EDUCATION ADVISOR WITH THE ASC LANGUAGE AND TUTORING PROGRAMS AND THEIR COMPONENTS AND FURTHER SUPPORT STUDENTS TO FACILITATE THEIR ACADEMIC SUCCESS.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Monitor the functioning and daily operations of the peer tutoring centre and ELL tutoring programs for the Academic Success Centre, including the generation of the ASC peer tutoring schedule.
  • Monitor and assess the effectiveness of these tutoring services.
  • Facilitate tutor training for Academic Success Centre tutors and peer tutors of JAC Learning Centres.
  • Collaborate with other departments on campus to establish, enrich and support tutoring initiatives (i.e. Language Resource Centre, Continuing Education, International Office, SUJAC, etc.).
  • Analyze existing tutoring programs at JAC and elsewhere and apply best practices learned to ASC programs.
  • Collaborate closely with other ASC programs (English Language Tutorials, Conversation Groups, etc.).
  • Maintain a working knowledge of multiple student engagement platforms (TEAMS, Kudoboard, etc.).
  • Engage with students on multiple platforms (TEAMS, Moodle, Lea, etc.) to support their success.
  • Maintain and update ASC tutoring database regularly and modify accordingly.
  • Assist and tutor students individually.
  • Conduct study skills and soft skills workshops.
  • Conduct and participate in open, drop-in tutorials for students.
  • Keep statistics in areas of responsibility.
  • Assist with publicizing services provided by the Academic Success Centre through various media (social networking, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc.).
  • Participate in activities that promote the Academic Success Centre.
  • Participate in college-wide events representing the Academic Success Centre (ie. Open House, Info Night, etc.).
  • Support projects, research initiatives, programs of the Academic Success Centre.
  • Perform other related tasks as may be assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:EducationDiploma of college studies (DEC) in an appropriate specialty or a diploma or an attestation of studies which is recognized as equivalent by the competent authority.Specific Requirements:
  • Strong organizational skills preferred
  • Strong presentation skills preferred
  • Experienced in tutoring techniques an asset
  • Direct and relevant experience in the functioning of a tutoring centre an asset
  • Knowledgeable about tutoring centres and their types of programs an asset
  • Ability to understand and relate well to the diverse College student population preferred
  • Autonomous, ability to work with minimal supervision preferred
  • Computer skills (Word, Excel, Internet)
  • Advanced English – oral, written and written comprehension
  • Intermediate French – oral, written and written comprehension
