Job TitleLaboratory Technician - WoodshopJob TypePermanent Part-timeCategoryAcademic supportSalary GradeLaboratory Technician - $24.21 - $32.32Job DescriptionIMPORTANT: Effective immediatelyJOB SUMMARY:Under general supervision of the Dean of Arts & General Education, is responsible for the purchase of materials, the supervision of technical areas, and workshop areas including woodshops/props shops, scenic painting shop and large and small production labs (including drafting and scenic design), and assisting faculty and students in the aforementioned spaces as assigned.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supervision and guidance to students and faculty working in technical areas both during and outside of regular classroom activities. Assisting with implementation of safe working procedures, and overseeing they are followed. This included up-to-date SMS and WHMIS compliance.
  • Supervision of and/or construction of, and installation of technical elements for departmental productions
  • Maintain all tools, power machinery, and equipment and prepare for all classes and work sessions. i.e. set design construction and set design, drafting, props design and props construction, scene paint, etc. Arrange for annual maintenance of all tools and equipment as required.
  • Maintain, prepare and ensure that all areas are stocked for classes, work sessions and productions i.e. lumber, screws and glue, drafting vellum, scenic paints and brushes, props foam, and all other sundries required for woodshops/props shops, scene painting lab and production labs (including drafting and scenic design)
  • Ordering of materials, equipment and machinery for classes and productions, and maintaining the given budget. Procure quotes on new items to purchase through College Capital, and then finalizing purchases once expenses are authorized by Dept Chair or Production Manager in accordance with College procedures.
  • Transporting tools and equipment to repair shops and picking up rental equipment or small items as needed.
  • Liaise with groups from the College, community, and other groups to sign out tools and / or assist with community outreach through construction, as a schedule permits.
  • Research and share information on new state of the art construction methods and tools.
  • Assist faculty in coordinating and supervising all classes, production labs and performance runs for departmental productions and presentations including show calls, set ups and strikes.
  • Maintaining the department Petty Cash float, in accordance with College procedures. (Leave with Kevin)
  • Adhere to the department timetabling which often includes evenings and weekend work sessions as well as student vacation periods. Work hours will change according to the needs of the department. Evening and weekend work will be required during the departments production periods. More specifically production periods are October, November, December and March, April and May. Classes will also be held during these times, therefore the work schedule will not be exclusively evenings and weekends.
  • Performance of other related tasks as assigned
  • Employee will report to the chair of the department or Production Manager to receive schedule and priority of tasks.
QUALIFICATIONS:EducationCollege diploma in an appropriate specialty or a diploma or an attestation of studies which is recognized as equivalent by the competent authoritySpecific Requirements:
  • Knowledge of wood shop tools and procedures, theatrical rigging, stagecraft, and Autocad/Vectorworks, or the ability to learn computer assisted drafting autonomously.
  • Extensive professional experience in a variety of theatres and/or live performance is an asset
  • Field experience working with students an asset
  • Autonomous - able to work with minimal supervision
  • Knowledge of lighting, sound and rigging systems is an asset.
  • Quebec class 5 driver’s licence
  • Basic French – oral
  • Advanced English – oral and written

  • English (advanced oral and written)
  • French (basic oral)
