Job Description

Position InformationPosition Number S00735Position Title ASE LiaisonDivision/Portfolio Arts and Foundational ProgramsDepartment/Program Adult Special EducationLocation Salmon ArmOther Flexible Work OptionsYour OpportunityUnder the limited supervision of the Adult Special Education (ASE) Instructor, the ASE Liaison is responsible for: Planning, implementing, and supervising the community portion of the PACE (Preparing for Access to Careers & Education) program and for providing students with hands-on opportunity to practice skills learned in the classroom.The Liaison supports ASE students in the classroom and in the community and also provides job search support for students leaving the PACE Program and the SAME (Supported Access to Modified Education) program. The Liaison will also promote ASE in the community with employers and community agencies and perform other related duties as required.Functions and Duties1. Supports each PACE student to organize and complete:

  • Information interviews with employers about jobs relevant to the student’s career choice;
  • Job shadows in workplaces relevant to the student’s career choice;
  • Work experience placements in the most appropriate employment situation.
2. Markets ASE Programs
  • Represents PACE to employers and identifies work experience hosts to provide on-the-job-training for each PACE student in jobs related to their skills and interests. Arranges interviews and formalizes placement agreements.
  • Represents ASE to high schools to support transition of students.
  • Represents ASE to community agencies to describe ASE programs; to identify the needs of their clients, and learn about the supports they have to offer ASE students.
  • Promotes the SAME program within the institution and the community.
3. Visits placement sites regularly to ensure that quality training is being provided.
  • Provides hands-on training to the student and supports work experience hosts to plan for and provide better job training experiences for students.
  • Works with students to identify learning goals.
4. Meets regularly with the PACE Instructor to:
  • Plan employment options, discuss strategies and supports, and give feedback on student progress and issues;
  • Coordinate the classroom material with the following community components:
 Community Awareness, Career Research, Communication Skills; Employment Support
  • Evaluate PACE Applied Skills and Employment Connections.
5. Supports PACE and SAME students to:
  • Locate and connect with appropriate public and private employment agencies
  • Practice self-advocacy and assertiveness skills
  • Disclose disability
  • Describe to work experience supervisors reasonable accommodations and workplace supports
  • Deal with interpersonal issues as they arise in the work experience or workplace situation
  • Use the bus system and read maps
6. Supports Employment Connection students to organize and carry out a job search.7. Serves as liaison and trouble-shooter between the ASE instructor, student and the work experience host. In the event that trouble arises that cannot be resolved, terminates placement in consultation with the ASE instructor and arranges alternate placement or recommends that the student not continue with the program.8. Ensures that the following evaluations occur for each PACE student and that attendance and evaluation forms are completed and filed as necessary:
  • Workplace evaluations of student
  • Student self-evaluation of work experience
  • Student reports related to career exploration activities
9. Provides Employment Connection students with initial employment support on the job.10. Provides PACE/SAME or other ASE students with classroom support.11. Performs other related duties as required.Education and ExperienceGraduation from a four-year college or university program in a related area such as a social services field. Over 1 year and up to and including 2 years related experience working with adults with special needs in a variety of programs within a Post-Secondary environment.Preferred – Knowledge of the local employment market and job placement opportunities and knowledge of the post-secondary environment and the educational needs of adult students with cognitive disabilities would be an asset.Skills and AbilitiesThis position is a highly skilled service role that requires:
  • Strong planning, marketing, promotional and presentation skills
  • Excellent problem-solving skills
  • Strong organizational skills, initiative, and the ability to manage a multitude of diverse activities, simultaneously under time constraints with limited supervision.
  • The ability to work both independently and as part of a team with an aptitude for working in a collegial and collaborative environment
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills
  • Well developed interpersonal skills, in particular the ability to exercise tact, discretion and sound judgment and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, colleagues, and the employment community.
Preferred QualificationsThe Adult Special Education Department is seeking a Part-Time, sessional support ASE Liaison for the Penticton Campus.
