Job Description

Division: Community ServicesDepartment: Recreation and Community DevelopmentTerm: 1 Temp Full Time position(s) available for approximately 24 months.Closing Date: 11/07/2022Labour Group: CUPE 59Posting: 1539Job SummaryUnder supervision of the Recreation Technician 10, this position monitors the lifeguard and instructional standards, provided in an aquatic environment, in accordance with the health and safety standards adopted by the City of Saskatoon.Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provides guidance, coaching, training, development, and monitoring of the technical skills of lifeguard and instruction staff in accordance with the technical standards, skills, and knowledge requirements.
  • Mentoring staff by providing lifeguards and instructors with on-going feedback and evaluations in order to develop technical aquatic skills of lifeguarding staff.
  • Provides technical advice and support in the area of aquatic related programmings to all program staff. This does not include rental/user group activities.
  • Assists with the development and delivery of lifeguard and instructor orientation and in-service training programs and resources.
  • Assists with the development of lifeguard and instructor evaluation procedures and practices.
  • Provides instruction and safeguards public admission and rental group activities in accordance with the established lifeguard and instructor standards, skills, and knowledge, as required.
  • Participates in training programs, conferences and workshops established to maintain fitness levels as well as lifeguard and instructor standards.
  • Provides direction and assistance during emergency situations, as required.
  • Provides aquatic related education and training tools, for the aquatic staff, the program participants and the public, as required.
  • Provides recertification clinics for lifeguard and instructor staff, as required.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Grade 12 education.
  • Possession of the following valid qualifications:
    • CPR certification – Basic Rescuer Level C;
    • National Lifeguard Service Certification (Pool Option);
    • Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certification;
    • Lifesaving Instructor Certification;
    • Aquatic Emergency Care Award or Standard First Aid;
    • Possession of either National Lifeguard (N.L.S.) Instructor or a Canadian Red Cross Society Water Safety Instructor Trainer (including mentorship); with the ability to obtain the other one within 6 months.
    • Possession of, or ability to obtain within 6 months after date of hire, Standard First Aid/CPR Course Conductor certification.
  • Two years experience as a lifeguard and instructor.
  • Knowledge of current lifeguard techniques, first aid, emergency procedures, and instructional techniques, methods and practices.
  • Ability to direct and provide leadership and support to staff in carrying out lifeguard and instructor standards, skills, and techniques.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with staff, peers, supervisor, and the public.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing to supervisor, staff, and the public.
  • Ability to demonstrate skills and techniques required.
  • Ability to maintain fitness level necessary to perform required skills and techniques.
  • Ability to exercise good judgement in resolving issues that affect use of the facility by external organizations and the public, and direction during emergency situations.
  • Skill in operation of a computer with word-processing and spreadsheet software.
