Primary Purpose: The Clinical Dentist provides the full-scope of general practice dental services to patients of the College of Dentistry’s clinics, including but not limited to: examinations, X-rays and other diagnostic testing, treatment planning, oral hygiene instruction, nutrition counseling, prophylaxes, restorative fillings, stainless steel crowns, root canal treatment, periodontal care, removable and fixed prosthodontic care, extractions, and other oral health services within the scope of practice of dentistry in Saskatchewan. The incumbent will work as a member of a multidisciplinary team providing high quality services designed to promote, maintain, or restore oral health for priority populations served by the College of Dentistry, University of Saskatchewan. This position also provides general supervision and guidance to student clinical work to enhance the student experience.The Clinical Dentist will work primarily in College outreach clinics in the Big River First Nation, LaLoche, Ile-a-la-Crosse, Tisdale, Yellow Quill First Nation, Kinistin Saulteaux Nation area, Prince Albert Campus or Saskatoon West Dental Clinics but may be required to provide service at other clinics, requiring travel within the province.Nature of Work: The Clinical Dentist provides professional, high quality service to clinic and must have a good overall understanding of Clinic and College policies and processes to appropriately meet the needs of students and patients. Due to high volumes of work in a busy clinical environment with frequent interruptions, this position requires the ability to multi-task with speed and accuracy as patient care and clinic income are directly affected. This position has little control of the work pace, as pace is driven by clinic, patient, and student activity. Discretion is required as this position is privy to and works with sensitive and confidential patient information.Typical Duties or Accountabilities:Provide comprehensive, patient-specific dental treatment services to clinical patients in accordance with the Dental Disciplines Act and that meet the standards of care for a general practitioner in Saskatchewan, including but not limited to:o Examinationso Diagnosing oral diseaseso Promoting oral health and disease preventiono Creating treatment plans to maintain or restore the oral health of patientso Interpreting x-rays and diagnostic testso Ensuring the safe administration of anestheticso Monitoring growth and development of the teeth and jawso Performing surgical procedures on the teeth, bone and soft tissues of the oral cavityo Nutrition counsellingo Periodontal careo Restorative careo Pediatric careo Orthodontic careo Root canal treatmento Removable and fixed prosthodontic careo Prescribing and dispensing medicationProvide general supervision, guidance and mentoring to students on the clinic floor, providing them with feedback and advice to ensure proper patient care and enhance the student experienceParticipate in dental health promotion and staff professional development activitiesMaintain license and good standing with the College of Dental Surgeons of SaskatchewanDevelop strong relationships with staff, faculty and students, fostering a collaborative, multidisciplinary approach to patient careQualificationsEducation: Doctorate of Dental Surgery or Doctorate of Dental Medicine from a recognized post-secondary institution.Within the first six months of employment in this position, the incumbent will be required to obtain: Accreditation in Infection Control and Safety; CPR and AED Certification; Biosafety Certificate; and WHMIS training, Culture Safety Training.Licenses: Must be licensed to practice dentistry and in good standing with the College of Dental Surgeons of SaskatchewanExperience: Experience working with priority populations is an asset.Skills: Strong foundation in the practice of clinical dentistry; Ability to provide independent state-of-the-art dental care to patients; Strong clinical skills to serve as a positive role model and supervisor for students; Ability to utilize and assimilate available clinical information to make decisions regarding patient care; Demonstrated initiative, integrity, collegiality and professionalism; Effective oral and written communication skills; Effective time management, problem solving, organizational, and interpersonal skills; Experience with dental software (e.g. axiUm, ClearDent, Dentrix) is an asset.
