Job Description

The OpportunityWe are looking for a full-time Intermediate Environmental Microbiologist / Geomicrobiologist in our Saskatoon office. This position will focus on the interpretation of microbiology data arising from genomic analyses of water treatment systems and biogeochemical processes associated with mining operations. Depending on the qualifications of the applicant, the position may have the option of also being involved in laboratory studies and/or data management and bioinformatic analyses. This is a great opportunity for career advancement in a young, high-growth company.Who we are looking for:You enjoy applying your knowledge of environmental microbiology to solving real-world problems.You are intellectually curious and enjoy multidisciplinary problem-solving in a team-oriented setting.You have a growth mindset and seek opportunities for personal development.You are willing to learn new tools, apps, and collaborative methods of working.You have read this job posting in detail and include in your cover letter a one- or two-sentence description of your favourite microbe or microbial process.You are detail-oriented and driven to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.What you’ll be doing:Interpreting microbiology data arising from genomic analyses (e.g., qPCR and 16s rRNA) in the context of water chemistry and treatment processes.Maintaining databases of microbial processes with up-to-date information from recent publications and newly described bacteria.Work collaboratively with field personnel, biogeochemists, water treatment experts, and data management specialists to interpret multi-disciplinary data.Assemble reports on microbial communities, including graphs, tables, and technical descriptions.Run bioinformatics pipelines according to SOPs and training provided at Maven.Advise on sampling procedures, locations, and replicates for client projects.Maintain impeccable notes and records of analyses and findings.Your experience and qualifications:Bachelors’ Degree in a scientific field such as environmental microbiology, geomicrobiology, or similar.5+ years work experience in water management or treatment (preferably mining or industrial waters). If you are over- (or under-) qualified, you can still apply - as a fast-growing company, we often have additional roles to fill that arent yet posted!Experience analyzing and interpreting qPCR and high throughput 16s rRNA data.Intermediate to advanced excel skills.Eagerness to learn and expand your knowledge and skillsets.Ability to interpret biogeochemical processes related to microbiology analyses.Familiarity with common environmental microbiology processes such as denitrification, ammonia oxidation, annamox, dissimilatory sulphate reduction, etc.You are intellectually curious and enjoy multidisciplinary problem-solving in a team-oriented setting.Other skills/assets (not required, but nice to have):Experimental design, data interpretation, and associated technical reporting.Hands-on laboratory experience (note, we do not have an on-site genomics facility, but do run a range of biogeochemical studies).Experience working in Unix/Linux environments.Programming skills including Bash, and Python with the Pandas library.Other types of work experience (e.g., service industries, retail, hospitality, restaurants, etc.) are included on your resume because work ethic and diversity of work experiences matter.MSc or PhD in a related field.Using editing and collaborative functions in MS Word (e.g., track changes, comments, cross-referencing, etc.).Ninja skills… in a fast-growing company we all wear many hats and are flexible in our day-to-day roles.
