Job Description

Indigenous Admissions OfficerAdmissions and Transfer Credit facilitates the admission of Canadian and international students to direct entry programs (and others) by interpreting and setting admission and transfer credit policy and procedures, by evaluating the credentials of applications and rendering admissions decisions and by evaluating and assessing transfer credit. The unit also works with non-direct entry programs to provide admission and international credentialing advice.Primary Purpose: To be part of a team that evaluates education qualifications, credentials, and transcripts for program admissibility for Indigenous applicants applying to programs administered through the Admissions and Transfer Credit Office. The position may also (or instead of) perform transfer credit evaluations for applicants at the undergraduate level.Nature of Work: As a member of the Admissions and Transfer Credit team, the Indigenous Admissions Officer will report directly to the Manager, Admissions and Transfer Credit, Teaching Learning and Student Experience (TLSE). This position is unique at the University of Saskatchewan in that the incumbent will have a professional home within Admissions and Transfer Credit and is directly connected to an exciting opportunity that the university is undertaking, known as the Oyateki Partnership. The Oyateki Partnership aspires to lead and facilitate transformation to change the lives of Indigenous youth for the better. This collaborative body is comprised of representatives from USask, Gabriel Dumont Institute (GDI) and Saskatchewan Indian Institute of Technologies (SIIT). According, this position will respond to the needs of USask Indigenous students by working closely with the Office of the Vice Provost, Indigenous Engagement (OVPIE), and in collaboration with the Kahkisiw Community of Practice, other USask staff across various portfolios, and Oyateki Project partners. Additionally, this role will contribute to empowering Indigenous USask students, increasing self-efficacy, and improving systems access and navigation in post-secondary education.You will assess the credentials of Indigenous applicants and/or perform transfer credit evaluations for direct-entry programs and programs with designated seats for Indigenous applicants, contribute to developing, updating and maintaining appropriate tools for units to effectively and consistently evaluate domestic and international credentials; follow standard operating procedures for credential assessment; monitor credential-evaluation decisions for consistency and accuracy; and contribute to excellent prospective student service.Typical Duties or Accountabilities: Work in collaboration with admissions officers and admission assistants as part of a credential evaluation team, to evaluate secondary and post-secondary credentials for programs administered through the Admissions and Transfer Credit Office and determine admission decisions and/or to perform transfer credit evaluations for Indigenous undergraduate applicants according to best practices.

  • Evaluate credentials according to national and international best practices and in accordance with admission policies; calculate admission and awards averages; evaluate English proficiency according to established policy and procedures.
  • Assist in developing, maintaining, and promoting a complete set of procedures, processes and tools to verify the accreditation of institutions, authenticate documents, and conduct grade conversions for Indigenous applicants.
  • Provide training as required to Admissions staff and Recruitment staff (and other stakeholders where required) regarding admission policies and best practices.
  • Provide efficient and timely service to applicants and university stakeholders.
  • Ensure that updated and complete information is available online for potential students to allow them to prescreen their application.
  • Perform transfer credit evaluations for undergraduate applicants, outgoing exchange students and other units when/if needed according to best practices.
  • Work closely with others in Recruitment, Admissions, the Teaching, Learning and Student Experience Division, and university stakeholders to ensure successful transition from applicant to registered student.
  • Develop a strong relationship with academic departments of the University, the Gordon Oakes Red Bear Student Centre, the University Language Centre, the International Student & Study Abroad Centre, the College of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, non-direct entry colleges, and other external partners.
  • Other duties as required.
