Job Description

Post Doctoral FellowThe the Department of Community Health and Epidemiology at the University of Saskatchewan invites applications for a position as a Postdoctoral Fellow to work with Principle Investigators and the CoVaRR-NET team to advance research regarding public health surveillance systems across the country.Position and responsibilities: The Fellow will be responsible for coordinating and advancing the CoVARR-NET research agenda spearheading work on reviewing current, and developing new methods of COVID-19 vaccine effectiveness surveillance in Canada. This will involve supervising a team of researchers working on this and adjacent public health research projects. The Fellow will also liaise with external research partners, staff, health authorities, and data stewards.The Fellow will steer the collection and integration of vaccine surveillance information from participating local public health units, as well as the coordination and execution of a Delphi process by which vaccine effectiveness standards will be created. The Fellow should have advanced familiarity with epidemiological concepts, survey development, scientific liaison experience, and strategic planning skills.CoVaRR-Net brings together some of Canada’s most eminent researchers and experts in a variety of disciplines linked to emerging variants. By connecting this country’s best variants of concern-related research labs, this network ensures a rapid and coordinated response to this complicated facet of the pandemic.CoVaRR-Net is structured by theme or “Pillars” which study and analyze a different biological aspect of variants.The Fellow will be responsible for coordinating the activities of Pillar 8 pertaining specifically to Public Health. This will involve working between the intersection between the Urban Public Health Network Members (Medical Officers of Health) and a team of both local and national researchers working to understand, and deploy strategies to mitigate the spread of, emergent SARS-CoV-2 variants. The Researcher will also be working with coordinators across Pillars to ensure coherence across the national network.Typical Duties or Accountabilities:Professional development: The Fellow will have the opportunity to work hand-in-hand with public health leaders and their staff from the largest health systems in Canada as they strive to improve population health and influence health systems toward more upstream thinking, health promotion actions, and positive health outcomes. The position is ideal for candidates interested in pursuing a career in applied public health and/or public health research.Desired qualifications and competencies:Qualified applicants should possess a PhD in public health, community health, or a related discipline (e.g. epidemiology, sociology of health, health policy and/or administration, health informatics, implementation science or health economics)Based on the Public Health Core Competencies, we are seeking a Fellow with experience in the analysis and evaluation of public and population health and health-related policies and programs; experience in survey design and methods; analysis of data, evidence and critical thinking; and mobilization of knowledge translation activities. Advanced writing skills, curiosity, and the desire to learn, experiment and innovate, are important in this role. Prior publications including in public health surveillance is an asset.Remuneration: This is a full-time position remunerated at $55,000-year, plus benefits. If the researcher is located in Saskatoon, a workspace will be provided for them on the University of Saskatchewan campus, or pending restrictions, the position can be fulfilled remotely.Duration and Location: 12 months.
