The project is expected to produce 4.35 million tonnes of potash per year with initial production targeted for 2027, ramping up to full production over two years. Jansen potash project is located approximately 140 km southeast of Saskatoon. Potash opens a new front for growth and is an expandable resource that can support a century or more of operations. Potash provides BHP with greater diversification by commodity, country, and customer.PurposeBHP’s Our Requirements for Community requires all our operated assets to implement actions to better understand communities, effectively plan and implement our commitments and evaluate and measure our performance. This standard outlines the mandatory minimum performance requirements for social research and studies, including social impact and opportunity assessments; human rights impact assessments; community perception surveys; engagement activities; and complaints and grievance mechanisms. The day-to-day implementation of the requirements is managed by Corporate Affairs team members across BHP.The Principal Corporate Affairs Potash is a member of the Corporate Affairs team, and reports to the Manager Corporate Affairs Potash based in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. This Principal will provide technical expertise to develop and execute Potash’s strategic stakeholder management strategies, plans and initiatives to fulfil BHP’s commitments and communicate and advocate, as required, to government stakeholders.The Principal will play a key role in representing BHP in senior-level engagement with political and public policy stakeholders. They will provide strategic insight, regulatory research and analysis, and advice regarding Western Canadian related and externally driven issues. You will protect and improve BHP’s reputation through pro-active and relationship-based engagement with relevant government and community stakeholders and communicating Potash’s long-term social, environmental, and economic objectives.Key accountabilities:

  • Identifying, engaging, and managing a range of diverse internal and external stakeholders
  • Planning, tracking the delivery of and managing corporate affairs and stakeholder relations initiatives, activities, and projects that generate value and drive the achievement of project outcome
  • Sourcing information, planning and conducting analyses to support evidence-based decision making in alignment with longer term business objectives
  • Engaging the capabilities of the entire organization to fulfil BHP’s commitments and purpose
  • Identifying and assessing risks, making risk informed decisions, using BHPs risk management framework, and building a risk aware culture to support safe and mutually beneficial performance outcomes
About the Role
  • Drawing on previous experience to generate practical and realistic options, adhering to proven solutions where relevant, including applying multiple lenses and stakeholder perspectives to enhance decision making outcomes

  • Evaluating different options or points of view by explaining the validity, benefits/strengths and disadvantages/weaknesses of each

  • Listening and clearly conveying information and updates, uses different communication methods to ensure others understanding the context, purpose, objectives, resources and time frame for work and tasks
  • Collaborating with other external affairs function members, including communications, indigenous engagement, social investment, and compliance and ethics, among others
  • Acting respectfully and fairly with all team members and stakeholders, embracing differences so that everyone feels cared for and included
  • Experimenting with better ways of doing things, learning from mistakes
  • Evaluates information from multiple inputs to solve the root cause of problems

About You
  • Extensive experience developing working relationships with senior government, parliamentary and industry stakeholders on complex matters, with an established professional network in these areas
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with technical staff to achieve outcomes through the sharing of expertise and technical capabilities and translating multi-disciplined, complex issues to mid- and senior-level stakeholders
  • Sound communication skills including the ability to write recommendations, memos, reports, presentations, and letters, as well as present information to a range of stakeholders
  • Extensive experience in the development and analysis of policy and its implications across community and industry
  • Experience working within government, particularly with regulatory and legislative frameworks and approval processes, and extensive understanding of how government operates and interacts with industry
  • Ability to work with a high degree of uncertainty and autonomy
  • Project management and financial acumen considered an asset
  • Exceptional written and verbal communications skills and ability to work collaboratively with a diverse range of people
