Programming and Data Support TechnicianAbout UsFast Genetics is a leading North American based pig genetics company with global reach. We provide breeding stockand innovative genetic solutions to pork producers to assist them in providing healthier food and using fewer resourcesin an environmentally sustainable way.OpportunityFast Genetics is currently seeking a highly motivated person to fill a full-time Programming and Data SupportTechnician position based in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.This position will include the following responsibilities and day-to-day functions, but is not limited to:

  • Provide general IT support: new computer setup, computer repair & upgrades, troubleshooting,
Exchange and Windows user account administration, product research/recommendation/purchasing.
  • Provide general database support: cleaning, formatting, and loading data in the database; data
corrections by drafting SQL statements, improving existing or build new tables and reports, developingprocesses for data quality control, and maintaining database integrity.
  • Maintain database front-end website: creating data entry screens and reports; troubleshooting;
improving existing reports;
  • Provide training for new and existing staff on the use of the database front-end website;
  • Support the development of tools to manipulate and analyze production and genomic data;
  • Maintain server backups and Linux installation.
  • Contribute to strategic thinking and definition of future needs with innovative solutions
The successful candidate would ideally possess the following experience and qualifications:
  • Diploma or B. Sc. in Computer Science, Computers System Technology, or a related IT field.
  • Good skills with MS Office (Excel, Word, Outlook) software are required.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Server, Exchange, SQL Server, and Active Directory is desirable.
  • Experience in Linux and SQL.
  • Experience with database support and basic data analysis.
  • Advanced statistical and data analysis knowledge would be an asset.
  • Experience in at least one programming or scripting language such as Perl, C++, Python, PHP, or Java.
  • Willing and capable to learn to work with data analysis software such as ‘R’, Ingres/Postgres databases,
ColdFusion, and PHP.
  • Enthusiasm to solve problems, learn new tools and methods, and adapt to changing needs.
  • Interest/exposure to bioinformatics or agriculture and livestock production would be an asset.
  • Good written and communication skills.
  • Attention to detail.
  • A valid driver license and occasional use of a personal vehicle is required.
