Job Description

Project Manager, Indigenous Initiatives Primary Purpose: The Project Manager, Indigenous Initiatives is responsible to lead, oversee and implement assigned projects to this role designed to further the mandate of the Office of the Vice Provost, Indigenous Engagement. This position provides crucial creative expertise in the development and implementation of special projects designed to enhance the reputation of the university both nationally and globally in the area of Indigenous engagement.Nature of Work:The position will partner and collaborate with other identified stakeholders to ensure understanding, knowledge and integration of the projects that are identified and being managed and implemented by others within the portfolio of the Office of the Vice-Provost, Indigenous Engagement and across the institution to further the University Plan 2025 and ohpahotân I oohpaahotaan, the university’s Indigenous strategy and initiatives. This position will identify opportunities and convert ideas into scoped projects that are subsequently prioritized, resourced and executed.Reporting to the Interim Vice-Provost, Indigenous Engagement, this position is responsible for the planning, monitoring, execution, having an active role in researching and analyzing data and information, documenting, reporting, control and cost management of projects and the motivation/management of all those involved to achieve the objectives on time. Many projects will require significant coordination of both internal resources within the Office of the Vice-Provost, Indigenous Engagement and external stakeholders and partners. Projects will be end to end, focusing on a broad range of objectives identified that are dedicated to delivering on the university plan, ohpahotân I oohpaahotaan, and strategic priority of Indigenous engagement.Accountabilities:Special Projects

  • Provides project leadership, direction, oversight and participation in assigned project initiatives that are designed to achieve the long-term goals of the Office of the Vice-Provost, Indigenous Engagement, such as the Oẏateki Partnership and the Indigenous Faculty Hiring and Recruitment Guidebook.
  • Determines the scope of projects developed and oversees and participates in the execution of effective plans that incorporate layered communications and change tactics
  • Develops a realistic schedule and holds primary responsibility for all aspects of and adheres to the project schedule
  • Develops the overall project risk strategy to which appropriate university risk tolerance is applied
  • Develops preliminary and final designs and estimates in conjunction with internal and external stakeholders
  • Provides timely and innovative responses to interpret project problems as they arise and to develop and implement decisions and actions quickly
  • Works with the Human Resources SBA to ensure change management leading practices are incorporated into implementation plans
  • Ensures proper alignment and integration of other project management plans and requirements known through the Office of the Vice-Provost, Indigenous Engagement.
  • Ensures timelines are adhered to for initiatives, by identifying capacity, pacing and resourcing issues needing leadership attention, and keeping executives aware of any red flags concerning timing or integration processes.
  • Partners with others to secure business performance data and analytics in order to measure and track initiatives
  • Provide timely and effective management of the schedule and associated logistics for projects
  • Actively participates in all phases of assigned projects and initiatives including data collection/analysis, report writing, and research;
  • Ensure effective management and maintenance of projects and initiative documentation and data files;
  • Liaises with multiple stakeholders and maintains effective working relationships to ensure ongoing communication related to initiative activities and status;
  • Coordinate meetings with research groups and various stakeholders, including travel logistics;
  • Prepare draft materials for meetings, which may include research, and ensure that minutes are documented;
  • Prepare follow-up correspondence and coordinate business arising from the meetings;
  • Along with the OVPIE team, assist with the planning and coordination of symposium, workshops, and other events related to the OVPIE;
Communication
  • Works with communication partners to utilize the most effective channels to deliver consistent, appropriately timed communications.
Relationships/Partnerships
  • Engages and influences stakeholders and process owners in development and execution.
  • Collaborates with subject matter experts and stakeholders to analyze and interpret data and to determine how to use, modify or change resources and processes for greater operational efficiencies and continuous improvement.

  • Establishes and leads cross functional teams.
  • Ensures a positive, diverse, and inclusive work environment.
Risk Management
  • Ensures accountability and transparency of activities and outcomes.
  • Ensures compliance with university policies and practices, provincial and federal regulations.
  • Ensures risks/costs are identified and considered in developing recommendations and/or making decisions.
Financial Resources
  • Working with the Finance SBA, ensures processes and systems are financially sustainable in the long-term.
  • Develops innovative and creative solutions to resource challenges by re-allocating and re-assigning resources.
QualificationsEducation: Related undergraduate degree is required; Master’s degree is preferred.Experience:§ Five plus years of experience in a post-secondary institution in an Indigenous portfolio. Experience working with Indigenous communities, organizations, leaders, Elders/Traditional Knowledge Keepers. Knowledge of Indigenous protocols. Relevant and demonstrable experience in leading projects; knowledge of university governance, policies, procedure, and administrative structures is required.§ Significant experience in project management or business process with a track record of successful delivery and implementation. Significant experience and success working with indigenous communities.§ A solid track record of leading by example in the delivery of high impact projects with multiple work streams.Skills:
  • A skilled communicator with the ability to establish and maintain effective, respectful and collaborative relationships across the institution;
  • Excellent process design, project management, data analysis and problem solving skills;
  • Strong execution orientation, demonstrated ability to see the big picture and complement vision with tactical execution
  • Ability to motivate, influence and gain commitment from cross-functional teams
  • Strong writer of reports and various kinds of documents.
  • Excellent qualitative and quantitative research skills.
