Job Description

Research Technician, Plant Improvement Program (PIP)PRIMARY PURPOSE As a Research Technician you will support plant husbandry, shoot, and root phenotyping, molecular biology, and plant cell, tissue, and organ imaging as part of the Plant Improvement Program (PIP) research group led by Dr. Andrew Sharpe, Bangabandhu Research Chair in Food Security.NATURE OF WORKReporting to the Technical Lead, Plant Improvement, and working collaboratively with Dr. Andrew Sharpe, you will be a key member of the PIP, supporting and advancing research. You will also be part of the broader GIFS team and your work will be planned and conducted in close coordination with postdoctoral fellows, graduate and undergraduate students, other research technicians and visiting scientists.You understand the values, culture, challenges, and operational needs of GIFS. You understand the interconnectedness of GIFS and the impact changes and operations have on all the platforms, programs, clients, and overall reputation of GIFS. You demonstrate a strong safety acumen. You develop and maintain strong long-lasting relationships.ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Plant DNA/RNA isolation, NGS/long-read library preparation and genotyping.
  • Plant management which includes husbandry (planting seed, replanting, daily monitoring, tissue sampling, harvesting seed) and phenotyping in growth cabinet, greenhouse, or field conditions.
  • Support bioinformatic analysis and presentation of project outputs.
  • Provide record keeping and regular reporting as per GIFS program management infrastructure.
  • Provide initial training for new team members and oversee technical experiments of supported PIP projects.
  • Additional duties may include providing technical support to broader GIFS projects.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • A Master’s degree in plant molecular biology, plant genomics and bioinformatics, plant biology or agricultural biology or a combination of a bachelor’s degree in a comparable field
  • Minimum two years of professional experience in plant genomics research.
  • Experience or coursework in plant molecular biology and genomics along with basic molecular lab tasks such as plant nucleic acid isolation, DNA/RNA electrophoresis, NGS Library preparation, genotyping, qRT-PCR assays and experience with Linux and R is desirable.
  • Experience with Linux and R.
