Job Description

  • Ensure customers are greeted within 30 seconds of their arrival at the LBM counter.
  • Assist the customer by taking their lumber order, answering any questions and aiding them in making the right choices.
  • Assist the customer is locating merchandise in store and online.
  • Ensure all paperwork is accurate, filed in the proper area and /or given to the proper yard staff member.
  • Be aware of current flyer or promo items, their location, pricing and availability.
  • Process special orders for non-stock or out of stock items.
  • Prepare quotes with accurate pricing and product quantities.
  • Be familiar with and maintain up-to-date information on product pricing.
  • Be familiar with local building codes.
  • Be familiar with types of building permits issued.
  • Be familiar with prices, practices, and policies of the company’s competitors.
  • Answer phones in a prompt and courteous manner.
  • Keep updated on the practical knowledge of building materials and lumber products, including their uses, advantages, and disadvantages.
  • Complete tasks within the given time period, work quickly when required and manage time.
  • Work with other staff members and departments in a cooperative and collaborative manner. May include team projects, fulfilling a customer order with items from other departments, shared job duties,and social interactions with staff and management.
  • Adapt to changing needs, conditions and work responsibilities.
  • Work without supervision.
  • Work effectively when exposed to emotionally distressed or irritated customers in person or on the phone.
  • Keep entrances/exits free of debris, ice and snow.
  • Check parking lots for shopping carts and return them to their designated area.
  • Assist with customer carry outs.
  • Assist in general housekeeping of the dept. Aisles clear and hazard free, shelves and bins correctly labeled and counters clean and uncluttered.
  • Follow procedures and maintain standards such as dress code, breaks, health and safety and shoplifting according to store policy.
  • Maintain professional confidentiality of all store business and customer records.
  • Complete all assigned training in a timely manner.
  • Resolve customer complaints in a positive and constructive manner.
  • Be familiar with current yard inventory and surplus items.
  • Suggest rule, policy and / or procedural changes when you believe they would improve efficiency, sales, profits, morale, etc.
  • Maintain professional confidentiality of all store and customer records.
  • Relieve cashier if and when necessary
  • Build displays, create signage for sales, promotions and special events.
  • Work on additional duties and assignments as assigned by management.
  • Work in a safe manner in accordance to provincial and federal safety legislation, as well as use of good common sense. Report any potential hazards and unsafe behavior to management in order to have the situation corrected.
