If you are a member of one of the equity groups you are encouraged to self-identify, on either your application form, your cover letter or your resume.” Title:Mi’kmaq/Aboriginal Student Support Worker Location: Shelburne County SchoolsResponsible to:Coordinator of Mi #39;Kmaw Services/EducationRole: To provide support for students of Mi’kmaq Ancestry/Aboriginal descent and their families in order to make their schooling a more positive experience, thereby helping the student achieve success and remain in school. The Mi’kmaq/Aboriginal Student Support is part of a team which is responsible to ensure the principles and best practices of race relations, cross cultural understanding and human rights (RCH) are embedded in the delivery of programs and services for students. They, as part of a team, will facilitate professional development opportunities for central office and school level staff which fosters opportunities for culturally responsive pedagogical approaches and promotes a positive learning environment free of discrimination based on a student’s race, language, religion, culture, gender, ability, or sexual orientation. The Coordinator of Mi #39;Kmaw Services will lead the team that includes the Mi’kmaq/Aboriginal Student Support Workers and is responsible for identifying and developing programs, learning supports and strategies which respond to the needs of all Mi’kmaq/Aboriginal learners. The Mi’kmaq/Aboriginal SSW will work with schools, parents and communities to develop partnerships and supportive relationships with particular emphasis on Nova Scotia’s historically marginalized communities.Qualifications/Abilities:Be of Mi’kmaq descent; Post-Secondary education (Community College Diploma/Certificate or University Degree) in Human Services or related field; A valid Nova Scotia Driver’s licenseamp; properly insured vehicle or have access to transportation as per Board policy; Excellent interpersonal, written,amp; verbal communication skills; Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team involving students, teachers, parents/guardian, administrators and community groups; Knowledge of Mi’kmaq history, and experience in working with Aboriginal youth, parents/guardianamp; their community; Training and experience in mediation and conflict resolution; Knowledge of and a commitment to principles of RCH; Proven ability to communicate and work alongside diverse cultural and racial backgrounds; Demonstrated ability to value the voice and contribution of others while remaining open to corrective criticism; Completion of WHMIS and First Aid, or willingness to obtain upon hire; Ability to work independently.Responsibilities:Respect and maintain confidentiality of clients. Act in a broadly supportive capacity on a personal basis with identified students (parents when appropriate) in a variety of settings. Serve as an intermediary and liaison between students, staff, parents/guardians, and community. Act as a positive role model with respect to professionalism and involvement with students’ in school and community activities. Become familiar with the histories and current circumstances of these students. Retain comprehensive records of all student contacts. Keep current with the academic progress of the students, and, in cooperation with School staff; establish a method for monitoring that progress and relaying appropriate information to the home. Consult with teaching staff to assist them in determining the need for tutoring and/or study skills enhancement, participating in planning teams as appropriate. Keep up-to-date with the availability of external support initiatives, programs, and organizations (such as target population tutoring programs, special scholarships, cultural activities, cadets, etc.). Assist in developing a learning environment and atmosphere that is conducive to learning for all students. Consult with system staff and appropriate external organizations with an education mandate to determine and implement strategies for decreasing dropout rates and improving academic success. Explore with students appropriate course selection and the various paths that facilitate successful school completion, as well as post-secondary career and education options. Monitor the daily attendance (punctuality, truancy, illness) of the students and relay relevant information to the home. Keep apprised of student disciplinary difficulties in order to take action in an attempt to avoid the need for suspension or expulsion. In the case of suspensions, ensure steps are taken to minimize its impact on academic performance. Establish, as necessary, personal contact with parents/guardians through visits to the home or another agreed upon location, or by telephone, etc. Develop a centre within the school where the Mi’kmaq Student Support worker can meet with students, staff, parents/guardians and others. Provide assistance to staff to help make the school reflective of cultural diversity and a welcoming place for parents/guardians and other community members. Attend community events relevant to the Mi’kmaq Student Support worker position. Engage in professional development (PD) relevant to the Mi’kmaq Student Support worker position. Attend Student Support worker meetings, as required. Meet at least monthly with the school administrator and, as appropriate, with guidance personnel to maintain communication. Carry out other duties/activities as assigned by your supervisor.NSGEU position - Monday to Friday - 7.5 hours per day and follows the school calendar.
