Job Description

The Ministry of the Solicitor General, Ontario Provincial Police, and the North West Regional Commander are seeking a qualified individual to join our Sioux Lookout Detachment. In this exciting, rewarding and challenging opportunity, you will provide administrative, clerical and court support to Detachment personnel in the co-ordination and processing of administrative services.About Us:The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is one of North Americas largest deployed police services with more than 5,800 uniformed officers, 2,400 civilian employees and 830 Auxiliary officers. We provide essential services that ensure the safety and security of the people of the Province of Ontario. The OPP is a division of the Ministry of the Solicitor General, the largest operational ministry in the province with a presence in every community across Ontario. We are the largest police service in Ontario and the second largest in Canada.Sioux Lookout is located in the middle of Highway 71, which runs north-south. Highway 71 connects with The TransCanada Highway 17, which run east-west, in the north and links to Kenora, ON and Winnipeg, MB to the west and Dryden, ON to the east. In the south, Highway 71 connects with Highway 11, which runs east-west. Highway 11 links to Rainy River, ON and the Baudette, MN US border in the east and Fort Frances, ON, the International Falls, MN US Border and also Thunder Bay, ON in the west. Sioux Lookout is located along the eastern shores of Lake of the Woods, nestled in Mother Nature. Lake of the Woods is one of the worlds largest inland, freshwater lakes with over 14,000 islands and 65,000 miles of shoreline. What can I expect to do in this roleTo provide administrative, clerical and court support to Detachment personnel in the co-ordination and processing of administrative services.How do I qualifyMandatory
  • Ability to pass an OPP background/ security investigation.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:Knowledge of relevant sections of Federal and Provincial Statutes to communicate relevant information to the public, companies, agencies and ministry personnel. Knowledge of family, civil, provincial and criminal levels of judicial system, respective court processes and various court personnel, i.e. Judges, Justices of the Peace, Crown Attorneys and Defence Lawyers, in order to respond to court related enquiries and complete various court documents.Knowledge of arithmetic and ministry purchasing, expense, payroll, inventory and petty cash practices including forms completion and coding to perform financial/accounting duties and maintain petty cash fund.Knowledge of Workplace Safety and Insurance Board Act in order to process and track injury claims.Knowledge of and skill in computer operation and software including Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint to produce court documents, type correspondence, prepare presentations and produce financial/statistical reports.Knowledge of records management practices and Niche RMS technology to maintain an organized, up-to-date records system.Oral communication skills to clarify the nature of requests from callers, relay messages, and respond to enquiries by providing detailed information, in person and by phone to agencies, companies, court and legal personnel, police services, and the public.Written communication skills to compose correspondence, prepare court documents, proofread a variety of documents, compile reports and summarize information.Exercises sensitivity, tact and diplomacy while greeting and responding to requests for information from individuals who are sometimes distraught, overly emotional or irate. Ability to work in a team environment.Problem solving skills to identify and analyze the nature of enquiries or calls, some of which are confidential and/or sensitive in nature, gaining clarity of request, and determines how best to respond or whether to refer person to a uniformed officer or other personnel. Problem-solving to check and verify a variety of reports, forms, and documents for accuracy; follow-up and correct where appropriate.Ability to plan and prioritize your own work on a daily basis.Additional Information:Ensure that you read the job description to make sure you understand this job.
