Job Description

Closing Date: June 15, 2021Reporting to the Senior Lead, Fish Habitat, the Lead, Fish Habitat Management drives the development and implementation of regional fish and fish habitat mitigation strategies for operations in the Coal business unit, including supporting all Elk Valley site-specific major permitting applications.The Lead, Fish Habitat Management is responsible for leading and supervising a team of professionals who are responsible for delivery of fish and fish habitat mitigation practices. This includes fish exclusion, fish salvage and relocation, standard mitigation practices during construction and environmental emergency response as well as public, regulatory and First Nations outreach.To be successful, we are looking for someone who has excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills; someone with the ability to collaborate with internal personnel at senior levels, within operations and across disciplines, as well as effectively engage with external stakeholders. Working a compressed workweek with alternating Fridays off, come experience what work life balance is all about!Responsibilities:Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and proceduresResponsible for developing and implementing fish and fish habitat mitigation protocols for existing works and construction projects at active operations and in other areas predominantly in the Elk Valley regionLead, supervise and coach a team consisting of one direct report as well as a team of contract fisheries biologists, design engineers and environmental professionalsInteract with regulators, local First Nations and communities of interest to seek feedback regarding fish and fish habitat mitigation activitiesWork closely with the mine operations and regulatory approvals teams in effort to maintain production targets and regulatory approval project timelinesProvide detailed reporting on scope, schedule and budget of fish and fish habitat mitigation activities; work with operations and regulatory approvals teams to develop cost estimates for annual budgeting cyclesPlan, support and report on fish and fish habitat mitigation activities including fish exclusion, fish salvage and relocation, standard mitigation practices during construction and environmental emergency response throughout the business unitEngage with the mine operations to understand any potential impacts to the site for fish and fish habitat mitigation activitiesUnderstand, interpret, and advise on existing and emerging federal and provincial regulations related to permitting and executing fish and fish habitat mitigationIdentify areas for innovation to ensure continuous improvement of Teck’s fish and fish habitat mitigation processesEnsure alignment and integration of permitting work with other members of the Regulatory Approvals team and with Teck’s regional environmental programs and social responsibility programsAssist with preparing applications, where necessaryQualifications:Science degree or diploma in an Environmental-related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experienceMinimum of five years' experience in fisheries mitigation and project management in the natural resource sector, preferably in miningRegistered, or eligible to be registered as a Professional BiologistTechnical knowledge and demonstrated experience in fish and fish habitat mitigation practices, fish exclusion, and salvage and relocation projectsWorking knowledge of provincial and federal regulatory approvals practices, legislation, and regulations, especially within British ColumbiaAbility to provide critical review of regulatory submissionsAt Teck, we value diversity.
