ExternalThe Corporation of the City of St. Thomas -Environmental Services Department is accepting applications for:CROSSING GUARD (Spare)Environmental ServicesJob Posting #29-02-19POSITION SUMMARY:This CUPE 841.4 position, under the direct supervision of the Administrative Assistant, assists students and pedestrians (as defined by the Highway Traffic Act, HTA) safely across designated busy streets, crossing at designated time periods, Monday to Friday at designated time periods during the school year.MAJOR TASKS:Direct or escort students and pedestrians across the street, at their crosswalk, stopping traffic as necessary.Maintain focus and avoid disruptions while escorting students and pedestrians across the street.Communicate traffic and crossing rules and other information to students and pedestrians.Review the intersection on a daily basis and report any unsafe behaviour of students and/or conditions to the Administrative Assistant / Office Co-ordinator.Work from a location where you can see and be seen by all traffic.Monitor traffic flow to locate gaps through which students and pedestrians safely cross streets.Be aware of emergency vehicles approaching the area, ensuring that the emergency vehicles have priority over student and pedestrian traffic.Use appropriate Highway Traffic Act traffic control signage (STOP paddle) in the approved manner.This position must take responsibility for personal health and safety insofar as he or she is able under the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its Regulations.
