Internal / ExternalThe Corporation of the City of St. Thomas- Valleyview Homehas an open position for an:ENVIRONMENTAL SUPERVISORValleyview HomePermanent, Full-TimeJob Posting #486-01-22POSITION SUMMARY:This non-union position, reporting to the Administrator of the Home, is responsible for all the environmental service functions of the Home including the physical plant, housekeeping and laundry services. You will provide direct supervision of staff in these areas, as well as oversee the planning, coordination, control and evaluation of the Home’s maintenance/preventative maintenance programs. You will also ensure that the delivery of housekeeping, laundry and maintenance services are in compliance with applicable legislation, Ministry Standards and the Home’s Mission Statement, goals, objectives and policies and procedures.MAJOR TASKS:

  • For all personnel holding authorized positions under the incumbents direct supervision and subject to the personnel policy of the City and prior consultation with the Valleyview Administrator:
  • Selects and hires employees.
  • Appraises the performance and conduct of employees.
  • Disciplines employees
  • Schedules and/or grants sick and annual leave.
  • Encourages and assists in maintaining a high standard of morale.
  • and/or By-law and that the administration of such agreement and/or By-law is carried out.
  • Receives call-ins from staff
  • Supervises and directs the operation and maintenance of the physical plant to ensure safety and comfort of residents and staff.
  • Supervises and directs the program of housekeeping provided or used in the Home including cleaning, dusting, washing and waxing of all floors, walls windows, woodwork, furnishings and washrooms.
  • Supervises and directs the program of laundry services used in the Home including washing, drying and ironing.
  • Organizes work for all contractors, which are involved with environmental services at the Home.
  • Supervises and directs the Preventative Maintenance Program provided or used in the Home and grounds.
  • Maintains a cleaning system that prevents and controls the contact and spread of infectious disease.
  • Ensures all annual inspections are performed when due.
  • Following approval carries out the approved program of expenditures within the limits prescribed. Sets goals and objectives for the department.
  • Develops, recommends and upon approval implements policies and procedures and work routines for environmental staff and other departments as required.
  • Conducts and monitors monthly fire drills.
  • Supervises the transportation function at Valleyview, including the maintenance of the Adult Day Program Vans.
  • Coordinates capital projects within the department and acts as a resource for other capital projects.
  • Ensures the maintenance, housekeeping and laundry functions comply with all Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care Program Standards.
  • Coordinates Waste Management System and pest control procedures at the facility.
  • Maintains correct inventory and distribution of disposable incontinent products.
  • Coordinates snow clearing and winter maintenance procedures.
  • Monitors the Continuous quality improvement program within the department.
  • Participates in the Senior Management Team of the Home.
  • Maintains emergency generator.
  • Maintains the emergency plan for the Home and update as required.
  • Administers the security of the building including door locking mechanisms and video monitoring system.
  • Completes risk assessments and implements programs to understand risk points and develop key safety standards for implementation.
  • This position must be compliant with all provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, related to “Duties of a Supervisor” and “Duties of a Worker”.
  • Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:Two Year Post Secondary Diploma in Environmental Services Management or Building Maintenance Management or similar education (ie. Healthcare Environmental Services Management, Building Environmental Services Facility Management) plus three (3) – five (5) years’ experience in an upper level management position in Environmental Services or Building Maintenance including supervision (preferably in a Long Term Care Facility, Hospital or Municipality). Strong customer service focus and the ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with staff, residents and related organizations at local, provincial and federal levels. Ability to read blue prints and writing schematics. Knowledge of work maintenance programs would be considered an asset. Knowledge of building automated systems. Advanced Computer skills and familiarity with legislative requirements and guidelines pertaining to all applicable Provincial codes, standards and laws including the Ontario & Municipal Building Codes, Fire Code, Occupational Health & Safety Act, WHMIS and the Ontario Long Term Care Homes Act. Possession of an Ontario Certificate of Qualifications in a building trade and Project Management (PMP) will be considered an asset.CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:May be required to work outside and beyond the normal hours of work without compensation. Must possess and maintain a valid Ontarios driver license. This position is a working supervisory position.
