Job Description

The Corporation of the City of St. ThomasParks, Recreation and Property Management Departmenthas an opening for the following position:TURF / HORITCULTURAL WORKER(Permanent, Full-Time)Job Posting #: 461-12-21POSITION SUMMARY:This CUPE 35 position, under the general supervision of the Supervisor of Parks and Forestry or designate is responsible for all turf maintenance activities within the City Parks and Athletic fields. Participates in a variety of activities related to all aspects of turf maintenance of City Parks, Athletic Fields, and related facilities. As required, assists in the environmental control, propagation, care and cultivation of flowers and nursery stock.MAJOR TASKS:

  • Provides all aspects of turf maintenance within the City Parks system (i.e. – passive, active, boulevards, and weed control).
  • Performs minor maintenance and repairs to service area equipment, including, but not be limited to multiple gang mowers, dump vehicles, loaders, tractors along with their various implement attachments.
  • Provides technical direction and guidance to temporary seasonal staff.
  • Participates in the maintenance of the Parks and Athletic turf and artificial field maintenance, buildings, and equipment.
  • Uses hand and power tools, operates light and medium trucks, loaders, and tractors and snow ploughing.
  • Participates in turf maintenance, renovation and restoration programs.
  • Performs minor repairs on Parks buildings where applicable.
  • Participates in the propagation, care and cultivation of flowers, trees, and shrubs.
  • Participates in the planting, pruning and removal of trees.
  • Participates in all Health & Safety requirements as deemed necessary by the Corporation in the carrying out of duties as well as any legislated training/certification required to perform duties within the position classification.
  • This position must be compliant with all provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, related to “Duties of a Supervisor” and “Duties of a Worker.”
  • Performs such other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:Diploma from a recognized horticulture program (2 year program) or equivalent and 2 years’ experience in the field of turf maintenance and/or horticulture. Must have physical capability to carry out duties. Must have a valid Class ‘G’ Ontario Drivers License and current First-Aid and CPR certifications. Must be capable of performing minor maintenance and repairs to sectional equipment and have proficiency in the use of hand and power tools, operating light and medium trucks, loaders, and tractors and snow ploughing.CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:Required to work outside and beyond the normal hours of work and participate in the rotational weekend stand-by call period.
