Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) takes its name from the Kwantlen First Nation. Our campuses are located in the unceded traditional and ancestral lands of the Coast Salish peoples, including the Kwantlen, Musqueam, Katzie, Semiahmoo, Tsawwassen, Qayqayt, and Kwikwetlem. FACULTY OVERVIEW: The English Department offers a B.A. Major and Minor in English. We run first-year English courses for all students enrolled in degree programs at KPU (approximately 6000 students annually, most of whom study in disciplines outside of English). The English Department’s small class sizes range from 25-35 students, and we embrace diversity, inclusion, and active learning in our classrooms. Our faculty members have a passion for teaching, a focus on transformative learning, and a commitment to the success of our students. Our department is also home to a Canada Research Chair in South Asian Literary and Cultural Studies. Recruiting and retaining colleagues who reflect our diverse student body—a large portion of which is South Asian, East Asian, or of mixed ethnic background—is a continuing goal of our department. POSITION OVERVIEW: The English Department at Kwantlen Polytechnic University invites applications for one 100% Probationary Regular (full-time ongoing) faculty position commencing May 1, 2024. This 100% Regular position involves teaching eight sections per year. The teaching rotation is Fall/ Summer, with a Spring PD and vacation semester. The department also invites applications for one or more 50% Non-Regular Type Two (part-time temporary) faculty positions from May 1, 2024 and/or Sept 1, 2023. These 50% NR2 positions would involve teaching at least four sections and may be increased to 75% or 100% positions depending upon need. English courses are offered at the Surrey, Richmond, Langley, and Civic Plaza campuses of KPU; however, some courses may be online. Applicants should have experience teaching online courses. The successful applicant will reside in B.C.’s Lower Mainland. Each semester, Regular and Non-Regular Type 2 Faculty teach several sections of ENGL 1100 Introduction to University Writing and may teach at least one of our first-year literature courses: ENGL 1202 OR ENGL 1204. QUALIFICATIONS: Our degree program is growing, and we are currently looking to expand our offerings in the following areas:African Literatures/Black Studies Latinx Literatures AAPI and/or East Asian Literatures Middle Eastern Literatures Queer Studies (LGBTQIA2S+ Literatures) Critical Animal Studies Experiential and/or Service Learning Composition StudiesWe invite all candidates in any of these areas who meet the qualifications listed below to apply. Successful candidates will be asked to develop curriculum in at least one of these areas of specialization. We are seeking individuals who meet the following minimum qualifications:A completed PhD, or evidence of imminent completion of a PhD, in English or literary studies A current record of, or potential for, scholarly activity/service within a relevant area or discipline Evidence of teaching excellence at the undergraduate level Experience teaching English at the undergraduate level in the past five years Evidence of specialization in one or more of the areas listed above, such as a doctoral dissertation, publications/conferences, comprehensive exams, and teaching history.Preference will be given to candidates with:A two-year record of excellence in teaching (composition and literature) at the undergraduate level Demonstrated expertise in pedagogy of first-year academic writing Experience teaching a diverse student body Innovative, diverse, and inclusive approaches to curriculum development, pedagogy, and scholarship A focus on student success and mentorship Dedication to a pedagogical culture of care and compassion Demonstrated strong commitment to departmental service Potential for community engagement in teaching and/or research Dedication to team building and collegial collaboration Experience teaching fully or partially online courses using an LMS such as MoodleAPPLICATION REQUIREMENTS: A complete application must include the following: a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, a statement of teaching philosophy, a sample of your most recent teaching evaluations, a recent writing sample or a relevant publication, recent course syllabi/outlines for literature and composition classes, a proposed syllabus for ENGL1100 Introduction to University Writing, copies of unofficial transcripts for graduate degrees, and a list of three professional references able to comment on teaching ability and academic accomplishments. SALARY INFORMATION: Placement on the salary scale will be dependent on level of education and relevant teaching experience. Advancement up the pay scale is based on FTE and employment status. This competition is for a maximum FTE of 100% (Regular) and 50% (NR2).
