Job Description

A wholly owned subsidiary of BC Hydro, Powertech Labs is made up of about 220 scientists, technicians, engineers, and specialists. They pool their efforts and expertise to support electrical utilities, original equipment manufacturers, and the automotive industries. It’s a value measured in avoided costs, productivity gains, extension of the service life of facilities, enhanced performance, optimized maintenance, and energy efficiency.One of the largest testing and research labs in North America, Powertech is home to a broad range of scientists, engineers, and technical specialists from around the world.Our cross-departmental teams investigate, diagnose and solve complex problems within a variety of markets with highly technical specialization, and to exceptional standards.Performs a variety of testing procedures using various mechanical, electrical or chemical equipment and materials in the laboratory or field.Duties:1. Performs and oversees the testing and examination of specific items within the mechanical, civil, electrical or chemical discipline by recording measurements, operating specialized test instruments, determining parameters, locating failure points and reporting causes of test equipment malfunctions and preparing related reports.2. Reviews project test protocols, inspects products and advises technologists of conformity to established standards, specifications and procedures; advises clients of approved procedures and recommends corrective measures or advises project /laboratory leader of unusual problems.3. Discusses and provides cost and time required for testing to project leaders.4. Provides routine technical assistance in the field on matters as these relate to testing and requirements.5. Operates a variety of equipment used in the testing set up.6. Provides janitorial and cleanup services for the lab.7. Performs duties of a minor nature related to the above duties that do not affect the rating of the job. This includes the performance of duties across disciplines in a job of the same or lower job groupSkills, Knowledge and Abilities Required:

  • Working knowledge of how to prepare mechanical, civil, electrical, or chemical equipment and materials for testing.
  • Working knowledge of mechanical, materials, civil, electrical, or chemical procedures, testing standards and quality assurance principles.
  • Working knowledge of how to calibrate and troubleshoot the related instrumentation.
  • Basic analytical skills.
  • Knowledge of related testing standards and procedures.
  • Written and verbal communications skills.
  • Organizational and planning skills.
  • Basic report writing skills.
  • Working knowledge of related safety and WHMIS regulations.
  • Basic knowledge of MS Office applications.
Qualifications:Completion of a Certificate of Technology in Mechanical, Materials, Civil, Electronics, Electrical, Power, or Chemistry disciplines with preference given to the discipline relating to the position. Up to 2 years of experience related to the specific position working in a lab setting up and performing tests on a variety of equipment, materials and components would be an asset.This role requires experience doing hands on work.As such, a Certificate or Diploma in the following are desired: *Electrical Engineering Technology - Power Option Job Status: Full-Time RegularJob Level:Group 7Annual Salary range: $58,080 - $63,778 Job location: SurreyThis role is required to be in the office.Please be advised that this role has been assessed as safety sensitive and pre-qualification alcohol and drug testing will be required as a pre-condition to employment.
