Job Description

Overall duty of this position is to support the engineering department in research, consultation, construction, fabrication or repair. The Welding Engineer/Technologist brings expertise to the engineering team advising on some of the largest construction and manufacturing projects worldwide including, but not limited to, bridges, pipelines, penstock, materials handling and marine equipment.Due to the nature of this position there may be on-call and overtime requirements.

  • Developing welding procedures to CSA, AWS, ASME, DNV, LR, ABS and related standards.
  • Developing quality assurance programs, inspections and testing plans.
  • Conducting QA for welded fabrication of including pipeline, railway, bridge and shipyards.
  • Witnessing and documenting welding procedure qualifications, welder’s tests and other activities related to welding programs.
  • Performing dimensional checks before and after welding.
  • Carrying out visual inspection of welds, as required.
  • Coordinating non-destructive testing including Visual, MT, PT, UT, PAUT and radiographic inspection.
  • Preparing weekly activity reports for the Engineer of Record.
  • Assisting clients to achieve certification to CSA Standards W47.1, W47.2 and W186.
  • Assessing welder performance, welding procedures and report on weld quality, inspection and testing protocols.
  • Conducting quarterly engineering visits.
  • Conducting lab work and material testing, data analysis and report writing for research and quality assurance projects including base metals and welded samples.
  • Assisting the laboratory in preparation of mechanical test specimens - tensile, Charpy v-notch, Hardness tests including Brinell, Rockwell, Vickers and installation and calibration of mechanical testing equipment.
  • Evaluating technical specifications and standards for varying product classifications.
  • Carrying out investigations and preparing technical reports on various metallurgical matters such as thermal damage/embrittlement and recertification of material grades.
  • Conducting failure analysis investigations.
  • Performing metallurgical analysis on metal samples using optical microscope.
  • Creating and reviewing NCRs and taking corrective actions by the documented learned lessons.
  • Supervising assigned work activities within the department to ensure a cohesive operational unit.
  • Assisting the Engineering Manager in the establishment of the department’s long term goals, and ensure compliance with said goals.
  • Maintaining current knowledge of relevant welding standards, welding technology and welding best practice.
  • Working with safety, 6S and lean leaders to conduct audits and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Maintain positive relationships with clients by providing troubleshooting for compliance issues and carry out noncompliance protocols.
  • Adheres to organizational policies and procedures, including but not limited to Applus Code of Ethics and Confidentiality Agreements.
  • Other duties may be assigned as deemed necessary.
  • Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical, Metallurgical, Materials or other related discipline.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience as a Material/Welding Engineer or Technologist.
  • Practical experience with welding and welding processes is required.
  • Experience with the inspection and testing of lifting devices is required.
  • Registered or eligible for registration with the Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia (EGBC).
  • Registered or eligible for registration for CSA or AWS Certified Welding Inspector.
  • CSA W178.2 - Level 2 Welding Inspector (CWB) is a strong asset.
  • Canadian General Standards Board (CGSB) Level I and/or II certification/s in UT, RT, VT, MT and PT are an asset.
  • Equivalent industry experience combined with other formal training and accreditations may be accepted.
