Job Description

The Families First Home Visitor reports to the Public Health Nurse Manager. In addition, the Families First Home Visitor works closely with theFamilies First Coordinator for guidance with regional day to day operation, service delivery, and expected outcomes of the Families First Program.The Families First Home Visitor is an integral part of an intra-disciplinary team that promotes healthy families and, by supporting the family unitwithin the community, they assist families to build parenting capacity and provide a positive home environment. The Families First Home Visitorwill provide education and information to families as needed in order to enhance parent-child relationships and improve child health anddevelopment. In addition, the Families First Home Visitor will advocate for their caseload families and assist them in connecting with othercommunity resources. The Strength-Based approach that is implemented through this program empowers the client and assists them indeveloping lifelong skills. This position requires flexibility with regards to hours of work and excellent interpersonal, communication, criticalthinking, and decision making skills, as well as the ability to work independently and as a team player.This position requires provision of service and travel to outlying communities.The incumbent must fulfill the requirements of the Criminal Records/Vulnerable Person Check, Child Abuse Registry Check, and Adult AbuseRegistry Check and adhere to all Northern Health Region (NHR) policies and procedures.QUALIFICATIONS• Grade 12 education or equivalent

  • Post-secondary certificate/degree in a health care/child care discipline is an asset
  • Must have a valid Manitoba Class V Drivers License, access to a vehicle, and willingness to travel the Region year round
  • Familiar with window based programs (Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook)
  • Working knowledge of normal child growth and development
  • Demonstrated skills in addressing parenting concerns
  • Knowledge of the differences in parenting styles and a willingness to work toward strengthening the skills of others even though they
differ from your own
  • Knowledge and familiarity with northern cultures and the population we serve
  • Understanding of the principals of statistics collection and the role they play in identifying Best Practice
  • Ability to speak Cree is an asset
  • Knowledge of and experience in parenting child 0-3 years of age
  • Knowledge of the Personal Health Information Act (PHIA) and the Freedom of Information Protection and Privacy Act (FIPPA)
  • Ability to facilitate learning based on learner’s age, educational level, and need or readiness to learn
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written communication
  • Ability to recognize maltreatment and abuse of children, as well as the process for reporting
  • Ability to respect and promote a cultural diverse population
