Located in the heart of the northern boreal region, the Thompson Nickel Belt is still considered one of the world’s most promising resources.The OpportunityThe Manager of Mines Technical Services for the Thompson Operations will lead a group of technical staff responsible for providing all Thompson Operating mines with technical execution, mine planning and scheduling including on site geology. Incorporating mine reliability and operating requirements, along with geology, ground control, seismic risk management, ventilation, capital planning, construction, and all other mine requirements, the Manager of Thompson Mines Technical Services is responsible for identifying and supporting long term mine engineering study work, rolling 24 month production and development schedules, mid and short range mine planning through the Remote Services Office, day to day technical execution work while also providing the mines with resource estimates, grade control services and drilling programs to support the mine design, planning and execution processes within.Additionally, in this position you will:

  • Supervise, manage, develop, mentor and evaluate the Mines Technical team. This includes supporting the EIT Program across the Thompson Mines as well as the development of other technical staff career progression
  • Accountable for the safe technical services execution work to support operations production and cost targets including risk management
  • Accountable for the work and safety of the technical team responsible for execution of the mine plan, including surveying, ventilation, ground control QA/QC, microseimic technology, geology and stope planning.
  • Develop and collaborate with the Integrated business planning, operations, reliability, geology, ground control, Risk management and ventilation teams on the capital and operating planning and scheduling for the Thompson Mines. This includes planning and scheduling the 5 year plan to weekly plans including the 24 month period and the 3 month plan.
  • Review and validate the key drivers for the creation of the Thompson Mines operating budgets
  • Collaborate with the North Atlantic In-Mine Exploration team to develop the strategic exploration plan within all Manitoba mines to optimize and prioritize drilling resources that ensure mine resources and reserves are identified for inclusion in the Life of Mine Plan (LOMP)
  • Collaborate with the North Atlantic Mines Technical Services team to create and implement processes, systems and standards in the Thompson Mines
  • Actively support the Thompson Mine expansion Project group
About You
  • At minimum a bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related field.
  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience.
  • Expertise in underground mine design, mine engineering, geology, scheduling and a high level of understanding of underground mining activities.
  • A proven problem solver with leadership, mentoring, team building and motivation skills. Ability to facilitate change, with a sense of urgency and constantly looking for what is best for the company.
  • Knowledge and proficiency in resource, and reserve estimations, geostatistics, minerology and metallurgy.
  • Skilled in mineral finance, understanding EBITDA, simple and free cash flow, budget drivers, annual budgeting cycles, cutoff policies and NPV.
  • Knowledge of engineering planning software (Mine 2-4D, EPS, MineCAD, Deswik, Vulcan)
  • Understanding of mining standards and guidance documents
  • Understanding of underground mining methods and infrastructure design.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products to include Datamine, Word, Excel, Access, and Outlook.
