Job Description

DATE: February 13, 2025LOCATION: Toronto, ON - Beverley Lodge Youth ServicesCOMPENSATION: $23.52/hourVACANCIES: 3 LOFT Community Services is a unique and dynamic charitable organization that supports people living with complicated issues such as mental and physical health challenges, substance use challenges, poverty and homelessness. Serving approximately 19,633 annually and providing 1,861 units of supportive housing last year, LOFT is one of Ontario’s largest mental health service providers of its kind. LOFT is also recognized as a Nonprofit Employer of Choice™ Award (NEOC) recipient.To help fulfill its mission, LOFT is hiring 3 Relief Youth Worker(s).Job SummaryTo provide a range of assistance and support to youth in crisis residing at a LOFT Program or living independently in the communityWhat You Will DoLOFT provides a safe and secure environment for youth between the ages of 14 and 18 recovering from family breakdown, homelessness, substance abuse or other issues. The position works in conjunction with others to stabilise their lives and improve their employment or schooling opportunities, by:

  • Conducting an assessment of the individual, determining their daily needs and developing a plan of support and recovery which includes identifying priorities and goals, in conjunction with other professionals and staff; developing strategies for maintaining these daily activities, negotiating priorities and goals; preparing case profile summaries for other staff; monitoring their progress within the residence for their transition to independent living; maintaining contact with former clients;
  • Building a rapport with each client and providing counselling or mentoring to empower each to meet the daily requirements of their housing environment, their plan of care and to support a healthy lifestyle; facilitating the acquisition of life skills in such areas as family relations, peer interaction, hygiene, medication management, cooking, meal planning, cleaning, shopping and budgeting, as well as accessing local educational and/or employment resources;
  • Maintaining a support network of social, family, or medical community links and resources; making referrals to other agencies to increase their awareness of wellness issues and ensuring that residents receive adequate support in various aspects of their life, particularly socialisation and recreation; providing reminders for medications and occasionally accompanying residents to meetings, on medical appointments or other outings; assisting the client in navigating the social services, health care, job or educational networks, liaising with community agencies, hospitals or significant others, or referring to appropriate community resource to handle special situations; representing the agency with other community groups;
  • Participating in group activities which promote the well-being of the residents and the smooth operation of the house; maintaining a general awareness of the activities or whereabouts of residents in the house, identifying issues, communicating or noting incidents for the director as required; teaching conflict resolution, crisis management and problem solving on activities related to shared living; mediating issues or conflicts between residents, or between residents and neighbours, following-up on issues to ensure satisfactory resolution;
  • Assisting in the administration of the program by completing and maintaining the required records such as resident files, activity sheets, logs, incident reports, etc. In accordance with established procedures; participating actively as a team member in program delivery and neighbourhood relations by providing support and consultation to colleagues, identifying gaps in service or training needs and recommending solutions, participating in meetings, planning and evaluation initiatives, committees, events and activities, orienting new staff and residents, providing direction to students or volunteers;
  • Participating in the up-keep of the residence by providing cleaning or minor house maintenance (e.g. Changing light bulbs) as required; teaching residents the appropriate fire safety protocols and conducting regular health and safety checks; maintaining and distributing petty cash, collecting rents;
  • Providing other related assistance as required
What You Bring:Must Haves
  • The position requires an understanding of the therapeutic relationship, the logic model and of psychosocial rehabilitation principles as acquired through a relevant degree/diploma in human services, coupled with experience working with adolescents or street youth in a residential setting.
  • Knowledge is required of the issues faced by youth in crisis, which can include family breakdown, homelessness, substance abuse, physical violence or abuse and serious emotional conflict, and of the community based agencies/resources which deal with substance abuse, educational upgrading and accessing employment.
  • Knowledge is also required of LOFT policies/procedures and schedules, of Agency philosophy towards its clients and of the legislation/regulations governing youth in a residential setting.
  • Experience in working as part of a team of professionals, and in conducting meetings or facilitating groups.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and counselling/mentoring skills are required to work in a team environment and to engage the clients in some highly personal areas, such as developing healthy living skills, life skills and in maintaining interpersonal relationships.
  • Good crisis intervention and problem solving skills are required, with an ability to negotiate with clients on goals and priorities.
  • Computer literacy with MS Word and Excel sufficient to produce and maintain files, records or statistical information.
  • Written skills are used in keeping records or updating logs.
  • Good analytical, time management and organisational skills to contribute to program planning and to co-ordinate and follow-up on issues or activities with clients.
Nice-to-Haves
  • First Aid and CPR certification with fluency in a second language an asset.
Work Environment
  • Staff will be required to work in resident rooms and may be exposed to second hand smoke.
  • Required to be on shift through all days of the week on a rotating schedule
