Job Description

We are currently looking to fill the position of Utilityworker II (Shift).Accountabilities: As a team member, you will be responsible for the safe and efficient performance of the coal unloading system. General utility duties include but are not limited to heavy labour, routine maintenance work, operating equipment, cleaning coal plant equipment, etc. You will provide assistance to other Utilityworkers in the performance of their duties.You may be temporarily assigned to other locations to assist other areas when required and will be expected to travel throughout the province.You will be required to take training courses e.g.: in-house safety, environmental, vehicle operation and other training courses related to your position. You must be willing to participate in on-the-job training or training programs that support the development of additional skills.You will be responsible for your personal safety and that of your co-workers by observing and ensuring compliance with all Occupational Health and Safety Rules and Regulations. You will be accountable for environmental performance as it relates to the environmental management system processes and initiatives. You will demonstrate your knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, and your responsibilities under the Act. You will take a very proactive approach to Safety in the Plant and will demonstrate your commitment to the Risk Assessment Process consistently.This position is considered a safety sensitive position. As such, the successful candidate must comply with the Emera Alcohol and Drug Policy which requires a confidential pre-employment alcohol and drug test in accordance with the Emera Alcohol and Drug Procedure.Work Conditions and Physical Capabilities:

  • Must be able to lift 20-42 lbs. from floor to chest height, 10 lbs. overhead on a minimal basis, and 10-20 lbs. above shoulder on a frequent to constant basis
  • Carry items weighing between 10-42 lbs. with one or two hands, use upper and whole-body strength to push and pull 5-20 lbs.
  • Shovel constantly up to 20 lbs. while using firm grip strength to grasp shovel
  • Perform static reaching from shoulder to overhead occasionally and frequently at waist and lateral level
  • Perform frequent walking, bending, stooping, forward flexional with neck flexional movements while balancing on uneven surfaces
  • Perform standing, climbing, twisting while shoveling with neck extension and rotation movements occasionally
  • Perform sitting, kneeling, squatting, and crouching on a minimal basis
  • Must be able to discriminate colours through vision
Skills, Capabilities and Experience: A Grade XII education or equivalent, with reading and writing skills necessary to perform the duties of the position safely and effectively, is required. You must be able to perform heavy labour duties with demonstrated skills in general plant and/or coal system cleanliness requirements and be familiar with and capable of using common hand and power tools in the course of the day to day work. Being self-motivated and having the ability to get along well with others and work with minimum supervision is essential. A strong environmental awareness and dedication, with understanding and experience with recycling requirements and standards is an asset. You must hold a valid Nova Scotia Drivers License with a minimum of two years driving experience and provide a drivers abstract satisfactory to NSPI.Reports to: Operations SuperintendentForm of Application: Click the APPLY button at the end of the online job posting.
