Department of Aquatic Resources & Fisheries ManagementMarine Conservation & Engagement SpecialistAbout The CMMThe Confederacy of Mainland Mi’kmaq (The CMM) is a Tribal Council located in Mi’kmaki and provides services to the eight Mi’kmaw communities of mainland Nova Scotia. Our mission is to proactively promote and assist Mi’kmaw communities’ initiatives towards self-determination and enhancement of community. The CMM’s main office is situated in the Millbrook Mi’kmaw Community and has over 100 employees. The CMM’s Department of Aquatic Resources and Fisheries Management (DARFM) is currently looking for an energetic, mature, and independent candidate to fill the role of the Marine Conservation & Engagement Specialist.Position OverviewReporting to the Ocean Science Manager, the Marine Conservation & Engagement Specialist will be a responsible for coordinating and providing information on marine environmental and conservation interests identified by Mi’kmaw Chiefs and communities. Marine conservation is a broad concept that has the potential to cover a range of concerns and activities. One of the objectives of the Marine Conservation Planning & Engagement Specialist will be to scope the interests and concerns of The CMM’s member communities on marine conservation issues and other marine related topics and initiatives. Other responsibilities include conducting research (e.g., literature reviews, knowledge collection sessions, etc), preparing educational materials, organizing training sessions, and coordinating engagement sessions. Additional tasks will be determined as the workplan is developed.Overview of Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage project deliverables and results in a cohesive manner.
  • Act as point of contact for community members interested in participating in these initiatives.
  • Schedule project meetings and track action items.
  • Coordinate project engagement activities and assist in their execution.
  • Develop outreach materials for the projects.
  • Oversee the acquisition of project materials and resources.
  • Track expenses and provide budget forecast.
  • Coordinate project engagement activities and assist in their execution.
  • Prepare and produce project performance updates to management.
  • Coordinate project meetings, outreach events and training sessions.
  • Organize research, reference materials, and other related materials in an easily assessable manner.
  • Assist the MCG Advisory Committee and the CMM in the analysis of research or reference materials.
  • Write reports and prepare PowerPoint Presentations for Management.
  • Prepare and produce project performance updates to management.
  • Attend periodic meetings that may be required and/or requested by the Program Manager.
  • Contribute and participate in aquatic files at the DARFM, including research activities, meetings, community sessions, etc.
Position Qualifications:
  • Post-secondary education in marine management, science, education, or a related field.
  • Knowledge of research methodologies and standards related to marine environmental issues.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to collaborate with various partners (e.g., Indigenous groups, academic, government, NGOs).
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work flexible hours and some weekends (if necessary).
  • Proficiency with common office software including Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Experience with data analysis and/or statistics.
  • Experience writing proposals and reports.
  • Must have access to a reliable vehicle and have a valid driver’s licence.
Asset Qualifications:
  • Experience working within/with First Nation communities.
  • Experience developing educational workshops and coordinating meetings or events.
  • Knowledge of current First Nation community challenges and opportunities relating to fisheries and marine management.
  • Understanding of issues related to the gathering and sharing of Mi’kmaq Knowledge systems.
  • Understanding of the Indian Act and Mi’kmaq aboriginal and treaty rights.
  • Proficient in Ocean literacy principles.
