Our 6,000 faculty and staff foster a vibrant, purpose-driven community, that celebrated 200 years of academic excellence in 2018.Job SummaryThe Student Success Centre (SSC) at Dalhousie Agricultural Campus, Truro, NS, is a multi-disciplinary team comprising Academic Accommodations, Academic Advising, International Advising, Health and Wellness, and a Writing Centre. Reporting to the Director, Student Success, the International Student Advisor will support international degree-seeking and visiting students through one-on-one advising, group programming, and campus-wide educational events that provide accurate and up-to-date information on immigration topics, policies and procedures, supporting international students’ success.Key Responsibilities

  • Provide 1:1 and group advising to International students and accompanying family members on matters related to immigration including but not limited to visas, study permits, post-graduation work permits.
  • Develop comprehensive individualized international student transition & support plans. Assist with issues related to their immigration status and ability to study in Canada. Provide up-to-date information and advice on finances, academics, social concerns, health insurance/MSI, etc.
  • Work collaboratively with internal and external partners including federal and provincial government departments. Proactively link international students with internal and external support services and resources. As appropriate and required, make referrals and serve as an advocate for students.
  • Provide visiting researchers and accompanying family members with immigration advice and guidance on how to complete required immigration applications, including reviewing applications, preparing immigration facilitation letters, and providing pre and post arrival information to assist with transition.
  • Develop, coordinate, implement, and evaluate the International Student Orientation programs as well as culturally relevant international student programming, workshops, information sessions and presentations to engage a wide variety of backgrounds, cultures, interests, ages and academic majors.
  • Provide leadership, opportunities and services that strengthen and enrich international student learning. Liaise with campus departments/offices and Halifax International Centre on issues related to international student success. Mentor, advise and coach the Global Student Community Society.
NoteDue to operational requirements, the successful applicant is required to work in-person on campus.Dalhousie’s vaccine mandate has been suspended at this time, and employees no longer need to provide proof of full vaccination. However, health and safety risks to our community will continue to be monitored and a vaccine mandate may be reinstated if necessary.Required QualificationsUndergraduate degree in a related field plus a minimum of three to five years relevant experience working with students in an intercultural setting (or equivalent combination of training and experience) is required. Masters degree in relevant field preferred. Registered Canadian Immigration Consultant (RCIC) designation is required or must be completed within 18 months of start date. Incumbent will be supported to complete the training. Must have proven strong leadership, teamwork, interpersonal and negotiation skills. Demonstrated excellent English communication skills (written and verbal) are required, including the ability to communicate to a diverse audience through various mediums. Additional competency in another language preferred. Demonstrated intercultural competency is essential. Experience working with international students or a knowledge of trends and best practices in international education are assets. Must have the proven ability to deal effectively with confidential, time sensitive information.
